Wonewoc-Center/Weston Squanders Opportunities in 8-Man Football Loss

The Wonewoc-Center/Weston Silver Wolves squandered opportunities in an 8-3 homecoming loss to Kickapoo/La Farge Saturday afternoon.  The Silver Wolves had 1st down and goal 3 different drives but came away with only 3 points thanks to costly penalties.  Evan Wallace scored the lone touchdown of the game for Kickapoo/La Farge in the 2nd quarter.  The Silver Wolves managed a 32 yard Field Goal by Callissa Keller in the 3rd quarter but that was the only points they managed on the scoreboard.  Keller also drilled a 60 yard punt in the game.  Cam Thellefsen had an interception for Wonewoc-Center/Weston in the loss.

Smart, Bette J. Age 80 of Mauston

Bette J. Smart, age 80, of Mauston, Wisconsin passed away on Thursday, October 3, 2024, at Gunderson Healthcare in LaCrosse, Wisconsin.  She was born in Mauston, Wisconsin on January 19, 1944, to Eugene and Viola (Blackburn) Smart. 

Bette graduated from Mauston High School and the University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse where she earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education. She went on to earn her Master’s Degree in Educational Administration from Winona State University. Bette began her career in 1966 as a first and then second grade teacher at West Side School.  She then became the Elementary Principal retiring in 2004.

She was a member of the National Education Association (NEA) and the Association of Wisconsin School Administrators.  Bette was a lifelong member of Saint Patrick’s parish in Mauston. 

Bette’s love of sports included all things Wisconsin – Badgers, Packers, and Brewers.

During her lifetime Bette enjoyed travel to Europe, Canada, and points north, south, east, and west in the United States.  Though struck by transverse myelitis in 2003 Bette knew no bounds. 

Bette is survived by Gerald (Mary Ann) of Machesney Park, Illinois, Robert of Zephyrhills, Florida, Sally of Janesville, Wisconsin, 13 nieces and nephews, and several grand nieces and nephews. She is further survived by her and the Smart family’s dear friend Peg Schmitz.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers Kenneth, William, and James, and one sister Jennifer.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial Saturday October 12, 2024, at 11:00 am at Saint Patrick’s Catholic Church in Mauston, officiated by Father Berns and Father Cruz.  A visitation will be held from 4:00 – 7:00 pm on Friday October 11th and on Saturday from 10:00 am until time of service at St. Patrick’s. Luncheon to follow. Interment will be at Saint Patrick’s cemetery.

Alstine, Donna Mae Age 75 of Big Flats and Wisconsin Rapids

 

Donna Mae Van Alstine of Adams, WI formerly of Big Flats and Wisconsin Rapids, passed away peacefully in the morning hours October 3rd surrounded by her loving family.

Donna was born October 30, 1948 in Wisconsin Rapids to Bernice and Sylvester Vechinski.  She was a free spirit that lived life to the fullest.  Donna was a devoted mother and wife who could often be on outings with her husband, Richard, or covered in dirt in her incredible flower beds that she tended and weeded incessantly. She will be missed more than words can describe, and leaves a void that can not easily be filled.  Donna was preceded in death by her parents, brother “Babe,” and loving husband, Richard.  She is survived by her daughters:  Michelle (Robert Wilhorn) and Shannon (Paul) Schanen; son, Scott (Shereen) Ostrowski; seven brothers; grandkids:  Austin, Skyler, Allisa, Emily, and Allison; great-grandkids: Nikko, Stormy and Axel, and special friends Devin and Dillion.

Memorial services will be 12 Noon on Tuesday, October 8, 2024 at Roseberry’s Funeral Home in Friendship, Wisconsin.  Chaplain David Borton will officiate.  Visitation will be at Roseberry’s Funeral Home  beginning on Tuesday morning from 11:00 a.m. until the time of service.

Perschke, Barabara J. Age 64 of Arkdale

Barbara J. Perschke, age 64, of Arkdale, Wisconsin passed away on Tuesday, October 1, 2024, at her home.

A memorial gathering will be from 2:00 p.m. until 4:00 p.m. on Friday, October 11, 2024, at Roseberry’s Funeral Home in Friendship, Wisconsin.

Barbara was born February 22, 1960, in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to John and Florence (Erfourth) Battige. She was raised in Milwaukee and attended Milwaukee Bayview High School.

Barbara married Alan M. Gillessen on June 4, 1983, in Milwaukee. Alan passed away on June 20, 2001. She later married Mark Perschke on August 13, 2016, in Wisconsin Rapids at her most favorite restaurant the Branding Iron.

In her earlier years while living in Milwaukee, Barbara worked at George Webb. After moving to Adams County, she focused on her family and loved being a homebody. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting, knitting, and doing arts & crafts. She had a huge “green thumb” and loved to take care of her plants. She also loved getting her nails done with her daughter, Tammy and making people laugh. Barbara would talk on the phone for hours, and especially loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters & friends, and going for bike rides with Mark on the Yamaha.

Barbara was preceded in death by her late husband: Alan Gillessen; parents: Florence & John Battige, and her grandmother: Bernice Godfrey.

Survivors include her husband: Mark Perschke; children: Tony (Tara) Battige, and Tammy (Justin Pierce) Gillessen; grandchildren: Jayden, Jesse, Jiovanni, Hendrix, Angalice, Aaliyana, Natalia, Romeo, Little Tony, Florence, and Francis “Frannie Cakes”; siblings: Donald (Gina) Battige, David (Jennifer) Battige, Joe Battige, Corey (Heather) Battige, Bernice “Pebbles” Battige, and Barbara Cavanaugh. She is further survived by many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and many other relations, and friends.

Hillsboro Defeats Wonewoc-Center to Remain in 1st Place Tie

The Hillsboro Tigers volleyball team rolled by Wonewoc-Center 3-0 Thursday night to remain tied in first place in the Scenic Bluffs Conference with Cashton.  Hillsboro won 25-16, 25-22, and 25-10.  Michelyn Hansen led the charge notching 14kills and 9 assists for the Tigers.  Michelle Hora added 5kills for the Tigers.  Hillsboro improves to 8-1 in the conference and 20-8 overall.  Wonewoc-Center drops to 3-6 and 5-12 overall. 

Brill, Debra “Debbie Rose Age 67 of Mauston

Debra “Debbie” Rose Brill


Debra Rose Brill, age 67, of Mauston, WI, began her heavenly journey on Sunday, September 22, 2024, in Mauston.


A Celebration of Life visitation and service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on October 26, 2024, at Conway-Picha Funeral Home, 450 CTH-HH, Lyndon Station, WI 53944. A luncheon and visitation will follow the service.


Deb was born on October 28, 1956, in Mauston, to parents Jack and Linda Denton. She grew up with her four siblings in rural Mauston, where she finally settled with her loving husband, Ray, of over 43 years.


Debbie enjoyed hunting, fishing, and spending time outdoors in her early adulthood.  She loved owning, riding, and caring for horses- a passion passed on to her from her father. Deb’s home-cooked meals and authentic Italian cuisine left little to be desired and she enjoyed cooking for family and friends whenever possible. Although there were many physical barriers due to long-term illnesses, Debbie did not let this keep her from making her signature meals and desserts for everyone.


Debbie was a passionate born-again Christian and lived the rest of her life serving the Lord. She overcame many struggles and challenges in her life, with her faith being the cornerstone of her resilience.


Debra was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Linda Denton; brother, Ronald Denton and sister, Linda (Dennis) Langer. She is survived by her husband, Ray Brill; brothers, Dale (Amy) Denton, and Bruce (Kim) Denton; children, Billie (Josh) Burdick, Kyle Brill, and Jage (Amy) Nichols; and grandchildren, Robin, Dustin, Dillon, and Kyle Jr.

Olson Schroeder, Rhonda J Age 63 of Mauston and formerly of Mazomanie

Rhonda J Olson Schroeder, age 63, of Mauston and formerly Mazomanie passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Friday. Sept. 27, 2024, at Mile Bluff Medical Center and Hospital in Mauston after a courageous battle with cancer.  She was born on Jan. 15, 1961, to Milford and Bonnie Olson.  Rhonda graduated from the Wisconsin Heights High School; class of 1979.  She worked in the Wisconsin Heights School District for over 15 years and went on to work in the Madison Area School District for another 5 years.  Rhonda was united in marriage to Richard Schroeder on July 4, 2008, at their home in rural Mauston.  Rhonda went on to work for the Department of Corrections at the Sandridge Corrections facility near Mauston where she retired as the Institutional Management Services Director nearly three years ago. 

She was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother whose greatest joy was spending time with her family and friends. She especially loved spoiling her grandkids, who were the light of her life.

A true social butterfly, Rhonda had a natural way of bringing people together. She cherished her time on the Wisconsin River relaxing on their pontoon boat, jet skiing at her daughter’s house, and spending winters in Florida playing golf and pickleball with friends. Yearly family trips to Door County were among her most treasured memories, and she found joy in gardening, canning, and cheering on the Green Bay Packers.

Above all, Rhonda will be remembered for the love she showed to everyone around her and the joy she brought into so many lives. She will be deeply missed by all who were blessed to know her.

Rhonda is survived by her husband, Rich; her daughter, Suzanne (Dave) Justman and their children, Faith and Cade; her son Tim (Rhonda) Hollfelder; her mom, Bonnie Olson, her sister, Rachelle (Gary) Wendt; Rich’s children, Bailey (Zach) Taylor and their children, Noah, Grace and Claire and Nathan (Becca Miller) Schroeder.  She is further survived by other relatives and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her father, Milford Olson, her stepfather Bill Willard, her brother Rick Olson, and a best friend Mary Dresen.

Rhonda’s family would like to express their sincerest thanks to the Mile Bluff Medical Center and its staff for their wonderful care.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 10, 2024 at New Heights Lutheran Church, 314 Anne St., Mazomanie.  A visitation will be held from 9:30 am until the time of service.
