Bangor Holds Off Royall to Get Closer to 12th Straight Girls SBC Title
The Royall Panther girls basketball could not overcome turnovers and missed free throws in a 53-44 loss to Bangor Tuesday night. Bangor never trailed in the victory and led by as many as 10points multiple times only to see Royall come back each time to make it a game. Royall was able to get within 2points late in the game as Kayla Rick banked in a 3 to cut Bangors lead to 44-42 but Bangor broke the ensuing Panther pressure and earned a trip to the free throw line. The Cardinals split the free throws missing the back end but Royall could not secure the rebound losing it out of bounds. Bangor executed a perfect inbound pass that led to a Kennedy Hamilton lay in to put Bangor up 47-42 and they would not look back from there. Bria Gruen led all scorers with 21points for the Panthers while September Harris paced the Bangor offense with a team high 15points. The win allows Bangor to seize control of the conference as they are now 9-0 in Scenic Bluffs play while Royall drops to 9-2 in conference action. Royall will host Brookwood Friday night. Bangor will travel to Wonewoc-Center Friday.
Thellefsen, Landsinger Lead Wolves to 7th Win of Season
The Wonewoc-Center Wolves used a high scoring 2nd half to bury Coulee Christian 90-61 Monday night. The Wolves scored 51 points in the 2nd half alone. The Wolves had 4 players in double figures led by Cam Thellefsen 31points, Tatyn Landsinger 18points, Jack Byrdy 16points and Gavin Olson 12points. Coulee Christian hung around in the first half thanks to the scoring punch of Jaden Heesch who scored 15 of his team high 20points in the first half. Jaden is the great nephew of Mauston Superintendent and assistant Mauston Basketball coach Joel Heesch. Titus Trailer added 16points for the Eagles who drop to 0-9 on their season. Wonewoc-Center improves to 7-10 on their season. It’s the most win Wonewoc-Center has had in boys basketball since the 2018-2019 season.
Royall Boys Use Big 2nd Half to Blitz Past Necedah
The Royall Panthers used a strong 2nd half to pull away from Necedah Friday night winning 57-30 in Boys Scenic Bluffs Basketball action. Necedah hung around in the first half and cut the lead to 7 early in the 2nd half but from there Royall went on a 19-0 run to take complete control of the game. Trey Wildes had a big game for the Panthers scoring a game high 23points. Bentley Rozek added 8points for the Panthers in a rare start for the freshman. Luke Murphy led Necedah with 7points. Royall improves to 8-1 in the conference and 14-2 overall. Necedah drops to 2-6 in the conference and 3-8 overall. Royall will host Hillsboro this coming Thursday. Brookwood jumped out to an early lead with their half court pressure and a couple of
Necedah turnovers for easy baskets. Necedah came storming back to pull within 2 at the
break behind the hot hand of sophomore forward Luke Murphy who scored 13 in the frame.
The 2nd half was a back-and-forth dogfight with both teams making plays. Senior guard
Jackson Cunitz kept the Falcons going scoring 14 of his team high 20 in the half, but it was
Necedah’s clutch free throws that iced the game late. Murphy scored a game high 30 in the
contest and sophomore forward Ricky Smith added in 10 for the Cards who won their 2nd
conference game of the seas
Heintz’s Bucket Lifts Necedah Boys Over Wolves
The game was even out of the gate, but Wonewoc pulled ahead by 13 at the half as Necedah
got into foul trouble. The second half saw the Cardinals come storming back to make it a
game. The back-and-forth game saw lead changes regularly happening the last 6 minutes of
the game. Necedah was down 4 with just 90 seconds left in the game. Senior forward Philip
Heintz scored the go ahead bucket for Necedah with just 13 seconds left on the clock and
Necedah came up with a stop off a shot that came nowhere close to going in. Junior forward
Cam Thellefsen scored a game high 25 for the Wolves. Necedah’s balanced attack was led by
Heintz’s 13 and junior guard Elijah Peak’s 13. Both players scored 11 of their points in the
second half. Luke Murphy added 11 for the Cardinals who outscored the Wolves 38-24 in the
second half on the way to their first conference win of the season
Royall Boys Win Ugly Over Feisty New Lisbon Team
The Royall Panthers Boys basketball survived a strong game by the New Lisbon Rockets Tuesday night winning 45-36. Royall had early leads of 15-5 and 17-7 but New Lisbon closed the game to 21-19 before Trey Wildes banked in a 2 at the halftime buzzer to give Royall a 23-19 lead. Royall could never pull away in the 2nd half as the Rockets got within 1 early in the 2nd half but could muster a lead. Sehraj Grewal had a game high 22points for New Lisbon in the loss while Royall was led by Braxton Board with a team high 19points. Royall improves to 7-1 in the Scenic Bluffs and 13-2 overall. Hot 1st Half Shooting Lifts Royall Boys Past Mauston
The Royall Panther boys basketball team used hot shooting to push by Mauston 63-48 Monday night. Royall knocked down 14 three pointers in the game, 10 of them came in a burning hot first half for the Panthers. Trey Wildes knocked down five threes in this game on his way to a game high 20points. Braxton Board finished with 19points for Royall who improves to 12-2 on their season. Mauston was led by Jase Navis who finished with 16points while Andrew Dillin added 10points. Mauston drops to 10-4 on it season.
Rocket’s Start Strong End Strong in Girls Basketball win Over Wonewoc-Center
The New Lisbon Rockets held off a midgame charge by the Wonewoc-Center Wolves to win in Scenic Bluffs Girls Basketball action. New Lisbon built an early 34-10 lead but Wonewoc-Center went on an 18-4 run to get within 10 before halftime and trimmed that lead to 46-40 but New Lisbon used its team speed to seize back control of the game. Olivia Bunker led the charge for New Lisbon with a game high 20points while Keira Wilkinson, Karey Edgerton, and Ameilia Dvorak all added 13points for the Rockets. Wonewoc-Center got a team high 19points from Kendyl Rowe, Eastyn Fry added 13points while Bryn Burns chipped in with 12. New Lisbon improves to 3-5 in the Bluffs and 7-8 overall. Wonewoc-Center drops to 0-7 and 1-13.
Royall Hangs on For Big Non-Conference Victory
The Royall Panthers boys basketball team survived a late game rally by Westby to hang on for a 56-53 victory. Royall led 42-31 in the 2nd half but Westby rallied and got within 54-53 before Braxton Board hit a pair of clutch free throws for the Panthers. Westby had a chance to tie but Everett Hovens open 3point attempt rolled off the rim giving Royall the victory. Trey Wildes led the Panthers with 18points while Dylan Velazquez added 11points. Brock Preuss had two clutch three pointers for the Panthers as well in the victory. The win improves Royall to 10-2 on the season while Westby falls to 7-5. Next up for Royall is a home game vs conference undefeated Bangor on Thursday night. Royall is currently a game back to Bangor in the standings. Royall Holds Off Fighting Brookwood Team in SBC Boys Basketball
The Royall Panther boys basketball team held off a feisty Brookwood Falcons basketball team Tuesday night 64-48. Royall could never pull away completely from the Falcons in the game. Dylan Velazquez led the Panthers with 22points while John Muehlenkamp and Braxton Board each added a dozen points. Brookwood was led by Drew Thurston who scored 16points off the bench for the Falcons. Royall improves to 4-1 in the Scenic Bluffs Conference and 10-2 overall while Brookwood drops to 1-3 in the conference and 3-7 overall. Royall will travel to Wonewoc-Center Friday night.
