Memorial services will be 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 31st, 2024 at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Quincy. Pastor Randal Walter Schoemann will officiate. Visitation will be at Roseberry’s Funeral Home on Thursday, May 30th, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and again on Friday at St. John’s Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. until the time of service
Jeanne was born on April 24,1950 to Howard and Marian Judy in Stoughton, Wis. She was raised on a dairy farm in Seymour, Wis. and graduated from Seymour High School in 1968. She graduated from UW-Stevens Point in Spring of 1972, majoring in elementary education. Howard and Marian raised their daughter to help and serve others where she could.
In the fall of 1972, she began her 35 year career at Adams-Friendship Area School District, teaching kindergarten at Pineland and Roche-a-Cri Grade Schools and second grade at Adams-Friendship Elementary. Jeanne was a dedicated and devoted educator providing a safe and structured classroom believing in her students’ potential.
On June 29, 1985, Jeanne married Larry Heitman on the front lawn of their home surrounded by friends and family. Throughout their 38 years of marriage, they remained devoted to each other and blended their families. Jeanne and Larry spent their marriage committed to each other and their children, teaching lessons of hard work. Jeanne would often help Larry maintain his family farm, by cutting, raking, and baling hay, and other farm chores.
Jeanne loved to tend to her flower beds and vegetable garden, baking and cooking for and with her family. Other hobbies included painting, reading, sewing and embroidery. Jeanne had the ability to create beautiful quilts, wall hangings, and Christmas stockings. She was a Boy Scout Den Mother. In addition to being a steadfast member, Jeanne was also involved in Sunday School and Vacation Bible School at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Quincy.
Jeanne Heitman was first diagnosed with cancer in 1992, again in 2017 and in May 2022 reoccurring in 2023. Her greatest lesson to her students, family, and friends was always strength and resiliency. “The strength of a woman is not measured by the impact that all her hardships in life have had on her. The strength of a woman is measured by the extent of her refusal to allow those hardships dictate her and who she becomes.” (JoyBell C.)
For years, Jeanne, along with friend and neighbor, Ruth Ann Fritz, provided refreshments and honored fellow cancer survivors at the local American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Each survivor’s lap was a special and emotional moment for her family, being grateful for another year with their wife, mother, and grandmother. Jeanne supported the Castle Rock Ribbon Ride knowing how important it was to help others when she could.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Howard and Marian Judy; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Edward and June Heitman.

She is further survived by nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends.
Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or St. John’s Lutheran Church.
The family would like to thank Agrace Hospice for the care they provided.

Elsing, John C. Age 80 of Kendall
John C. Elsing, a man whose life was a testament to the spirit of adventure and the wisdom of the land, passed away peacefully on May 18th, 2024, in Ontario, Wisconsin. He was the son of Maurice and Dorothy (Hanson) Elsing and was born on June 16, 1943, in Kendall, WI. John’s life came full circle as he departed this world surrounded by the natural beauty he so deeply cherished.
John’s journey through life was marked by a steadfast commitment to living authentically and with purpose. He was a graduate of Kendall High School, where the foundation of his lifelong learning and exploration was laid. John was drafted for the U.S. Army at age 22 and served 16 months during Vietnam, a period of his life that instilled in him a sense of discipline and a deep-seated respect for his fellow countrymen and women.
Upon returning to civilian life, John embraced the heartland’s call and poured his soul into the land. He worked diligently on a dairy farm, built structures with his own hands in construction, and maintained the lifelines of our country through his work on the railroad. John’s hands were rarely still, for they were the tools with which he crafted his destiny and provided for his beloved family.
John is survived by his children, Nikki and Pete, his grandchildren, John Elsing and Ashley Tuhill of Kendall, and Cole and Camille Vocelka of Chicago IL, each inherited a spark of John’s indomitable spirit. His great-grandchild, James Tuhill, will grow up hearing legendary tales of his great-grandfather’s exploits and the wisdom he passed down through the generations. John was preceded in death by the pillars of his own life—his parents, his cherished wife Dorothy, and his brother Don Elsing. Their memories remain a beacon of guidance and love in his family’s hearts.
John’s life was a symphony of outdoor pursuits. He lived off the land, not merely as a resident but as a steward. Hunting, fishing, gardening, and trapping were not just hobbies but a way of life that kept him in tune with the rhythms of nature. His commitment to conservation and wildlife was evident in his involvement with organizations like the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Ducks Unlimited, NRA, National Turkey Foundation, Clifton Sportsman Club, Pheasants Forever, and Whitetail Unlimited. Through these associations, John found kinship and camaraderie with those who shared his passion for the great outdoors.
To describe John as adventurous, wise, and faith-filled is to capture only a glimpse of the man he was. His adventurous nature was a beacon, inspiring all who knew him to explore the world beyond their front porch. His wisdom was as deep as the roots of the ancient trees he walked among, offering counsel and insight that could only come from a life well-lived. His faith was the quiet, steady current that ran through every aspect of his existence, guiding him through life’s storms and providing solace to those he encountered.
As we say farewell to John C. Elsing, let us not dwell on the sorrow of his parting but rejoice in the multitude of ways he enriched our lives. Let his story be a reminder to embrace each day with zest, to seek wisdom in nature, and to nurture the seeds of faith that can move mountains. John’s life was a remarkable journey that does not end here; it is merely the beginning of a legacy that will flourish for generations to come.
Rest well, John, in the knowledge that your life was a beacon of inspiration and a testament to the enduring spirit of humanity. Your journey continues in the whisper of the wind through the trees, the calm of the morning lake, and the pride in your family’s eyes. You have left this world better than you found it, and for that, we are eternally grateful.

Birdd, Robert “Bob” Age 67 of Hillsboro
Robert “Bob” Birdd Jr., 67, of Hillsboro, Wisconsin, journeyed home on May 16, 2024. Bob was diagnosed with late-stage gastric cancer in the summer of 2022. He and his wife, Ann, took on the many challenges of the last two years with courage and strength and the support of their community.
Bob was born on April 11, 1957, to Florence (Piatkiewicz) and Robert Birdd Sr. in Hillsboro, WI. Bob’s boyhood was filled with endless days among neighborhood friends. He and his cousins often ventured around the Piatkiewicz farm, located where the Hillsboro schools and athletic fields are today. During this time, he established many lifelong bonds. Bob was a Hillsboro boy through and through.
Bob graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1975. Throughout high school, he spent many hours playing football, basketball, and baseball. Bob and his friends attended the school dances and thoroughly enjoyed their youth. Throughout college, he spent summers working with the Hillsboro Summer Recreation program, which aligned with his education and athletics values. He supported himself throughout his schooling with jobs at Frito Lay in Racine, Kickapoo Stations, and Elroy Community Dairy. He went on to obtain his degrees in Natural Resource Management and Environmental Education from UW-Stevens Point in 1980.
In the summer of 1981, Bob met his future wife, Ann Christianson. Bob and Ann both played in a coed summer softball league. After games, they celebrated wins (or losses) at local bars – Hynek’s or Mabel’s. Ann caught Bob’s eye with a zinger throw to first base, securing a surprise out. Bob and Ann married on September 13, 1986, at St. Aloysius Church in Hillsboro.
Bob began his 37-year career with the City of Hillsboro in 1982. He served as a Wastewater Treatment Operator and the City Forester. It was under Bob’s direction that the City of Hillsboro was initially recognized as a Tree City USA. Throughout his tenure, he received many consecutive growth awards. The locals labeled him “The Tree Guy,” and he was well known for his Tree Top Tidbits and Arbor Day proclamations in the local papers. He also received several awards from the National Weather Service for his daily recording of local weather observations. He was always happy to assist in his quiet and helpful manner. Bob retired in 2019 but continued learning best practices in forestry and served as a forestry consultant.
One of the most joyous events of Bob’s life was the birth of his daughter, Stephanie. To say that she brought him so much joy through the years is an understatement. He was beyond proud of her and how she grew up to be a fantastic woman. The best gift he ever received from Stephanie and her husband Jacob was his two beautiful granddaughters, Josephine (Jojo) and Scout. He loved being a grandpa and made sure their time together was all about their happiness.
Bob’s quiet personality allowed him to be an excellent listener everyone around him. He had an unassuming sense of humor characterized by a short chuckle or a slight smirk. Bob felt at home being outside in nature. He was content to be alone in the woods and enjoyed the serenity in the whisper of the leaves.
Bob is survived by his wife and best friend, Ann, daughter, Stephanie (Jacob) Board and granddaughters, Josephine Joy and Scout Marie, as well as his sister, Stella (Kevin) Walker, nephew, Eric (Kim) Walker and children, and niece, Nicole Monks (Jeff Caher), and children. He is further survived by several cousins and special friends.
