Mauston Runners Dominate Dells Meet

The MHS cross country teams competed at the 2024 Wisconsin Dells Invitational on Saturday October 12th at the Christmas Mountain Golf Course. Teams competing at the invites were: Mauston, Baraboo, Medford, Prairie du Chien and Wisconsin Dells.

 

The girls varsity race features Mauston’s Aleyxs Smith winning the girls varsity race with a time of 20:44.  “Alexys took the lead from the get go and managed the race very well.  It is always good to see the blue and gold checkerboards leading the race” commented Coach DeVoe. The girls team raced to a 4th place finish at the Dells Invite.  Team scores:  Baraboo 37, Medford 45, Dells 65, MAUSTON 108 and PDC 113.

 

The boys varsity race featured  the MHS boys varsity placing five runners in the top 10 places scoring an impressive 25 points to win the Dells Invite.  Team scores: MAUSTON 25, Baraboo 31,

PDCh 102, Medford 103 and Dells 114.  The boys varsity raced another solid team race..The MHS ” pack attack’ placing five runners in the top nine places:  Josh Ellerman 1st /17:10, Brekk Peterson 4th/17;55, Weston Pouillie 5th/17:59, Sebastian Naquayouma 6th/ 18:05 and hakkon Peterson 9th/18:19/9th.  The balance of the BV team was in hot pursi=uit with Noah Cortez 17th and Jonah West 19th place.  “The boys varsity had and impressive 24 second time gap between our 2nd runner and our 5th runner- any time you are racing fast with a tight pack – good things are going to happen.- classic MHS CC racing” commented Coach John Maki.

 

The MHS CC teams will be competing at the 2024 South Central Conference Championships on Thursday October 17th at Westfield High School.  Competition @ 3:30 middle school race – 4:15 High School Girls and 5:00 High School Boys.

Wild Double Duals Create Clearer SBC Volleyball Championship Picture

The Scenic Bluffs Conference volleyball race is starting to take shape after a wild action of Double Duals Thursday night.  The four teams at the Royall Duals split.  Brookwood downed Cashton 3-2 in the first matchup creating a temporary 3 way tie atop the Scenic Bluffs Conference.  Cashton would bounce back to defeat Wonewoc-Center 3-0 in the night cap and Royall would upset Brookwood in 5 sets to knock Brookwood back into 2nd place in the conference.  In New Lisbon Hillsboro swept their way past Bangor 3-0 and then went on to down Necedah 3-1.  In the process Michelyn Hansen notched her 1,000 career dig.  Hansen now has a rate triple triple surpassing the 1,000 career kill, assist and dig milestone.  Cashton and Hillsboro are tied atop the conference with matching 10-2 conference records.  Hillsboro will travel to Cashton Tuesday night with the winner clinching no worse than a conference championship.

Wonewoc Man Thankful For First Responders After Motorcycle Crash

Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports a motorcycle crash occurred on Monday, September 30, 2024, at approximately 9:15 AM, in the town of Hillsboro.

Christopher Dale Moxon, age 51, of Wonewoc, WI, was operating a 2009 Harley Davidson motorcycle traveling north on County Road F, just north of the city of Hillsboro.  Moxon reported encountering gravel and lost control in a curve to the left.  The motorcycle went off the traveled portion of County Road F and slid across intersecting Butler Road.

Moxon was transported to Mile Bluff Medical Center in Mauston, WI, by Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service, where he was treated and released.  Sheriff Torgerson spoke with Moxon following the crash and he would like to thank all first responders, especially the very first to arrive at the scene.  Moxon was grateful he was wearing a helmet and protective clothing, vital steps in reducing serious injuries.

Assisting the Sheriff’s Office were the Hillsboro Police Department, Hillsboro Fire Department, and Hillsboro Area Ambulance.

The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

Ryan Pfaff Named New Mauston Varsity Baseball Coach

Ryan Pfaff has been named the new Varsity Head Baseball coach for Mauston.  Pfaff is 2002 graduate of Mauston High School and served as pitching and assistance coach to previous head coach Mike Stoughtenger for the previous few year.  Pfaff takes over a baseball team that has won back to back South Central Conference Championships.

Golden Eagles Knock Off Green Devils in Tough SCC Volleyball Match

The Mauston Golden Eagles hung on to defeat Adams-Friendship 3-2 Tuesday night in South Central Conference volleyball action.  Mauston got off to a slow start dropping the first set but bounced back to take the next two to take a 2-1 lead.  Adams-Friendship bounced back to take down Mauston in the 4th set to force a winner take all 5th set.  The 5th set was back in forth but Mauston came away with the win 16-14.  Maddi Quist led the team with 16kills and 13digs and Ella Franek had some crucial blocks in the Mauston victory.  Mauston improves to 5-2 in the South Central Conference and 11-12 overall.  Adams-Friendship got a strong game from freshman Piper Moyer.  Adams-Friendship drops to 1-6 in conference play. 

Juneau County Area Top 10 Prep Football Power Rankings Week 7

Power Rankings 

  1. Ithaca Bulldogs (7-0) – Ithaca cruised by Royall 35-7 all but guaranteeing a SBC Championship in its first year in the conference.
  2. Berlin Indians (6-1) – Berlin hammered Wisconsin Dells 42-6 making them the clear front runner to win the South Central Conference in its first year.
  3. Nekoosa Papermakers (6-1) ^1 Nekoosa tripled up Adams-Friendship to lock up a playoff berth.
  4. Hillsboro Tigers (6-1) ^1 Hillsboro locked up a playoff spot by whipping Brookwood 39-0. Hillsboro can improve its playoff seeding by defeating 2 solid teams in Cashton and Bangor.
  5. Wisconsin Dells Chiefs (5-2) -3 The Dells got buried by Berlin and now must hope for some help to claim the South Central Conference.
  6. Bangor Cardinals (5-2) – Bangor took down their rivals Cashton 28-21 to improve to 5-2 on their season.
  7. Waupun Warriors (5-2) ^2 Waupun is a win away from the playoffs after getting by Wautoma in a tighter than expected game.
  8. Cashton Eagles (4-3) -1 Cashton must at least split their final two games to become playoff eligible. The task defeating either or both Hillsboro and Royall.
  9. Royall Panthers (3-4) -1 Royall was blitzed on homecoming by Ithaca. Royall now must win their final two games to make the postseason.
  10. New Lisbon Rockets (2-5) NR The 10th spot is still impossible to place a team but this week we will award the shorthanded Rockets after their homecoming victory over Necedah.
