Summer Baseball Update from Monday 6-30

The Mauston Golden Eagles summer baseball team won a pair of games Monday night at the Monday Woodside League.  Mauston won game one 9-1 over Nekoosa.  The game lasted just 5 innings due to lightning.  Beef Massey got the win on the mound giving up just 1run and 2hits while striking out 7 over 5 innings.  Massey was equally good at the plate where he went 2×3 with a double and 5RBI’s.  Evan Parsons added a pair of hits and Jacob Daniels went 2×2 with a double in the victory. Mauston defeated Wautoma 8-6 in game 2.  Evan Parsons pitched 4 innings in the victory. 

 

The Tomah/SBC 19U baseball team routed Baraboo 11-1 Monday night.  Brookwoods Drew Thurston had 3hits and Kole Trapp had a pair of hits and 2RBIs.  Gavin Courtney picked up the win going 5innings giving up just 1run on 3hits and striking out 5.

Jacobson, Jacob Charles Age 90 of Adams

Jacob Charles Jacobson, age 90, of Adams, Wisconsin, passed away on Monday, June 30, 2025, at Villa Pines Living Center in Friendship, Wisconsin.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 Noon on Thursday, July 3, 2025, at Arkdale Trinity Lutheran Church in Arkdale, Wisconsin, with Pastor Terri Skildum officiating. Burial will follow at West Arkdale Cemetery in the Town of Strongs Prairie. Visitation will be held from 10:00 A.M. until the time of service on Thursday at the church. Military honors will be presented by the Adams County Honor Guard.

Jacob, fondly known as Jake, was born on July 7, 1934, in Big Springs, Wisconsin, to Jacob G. and Beulah Vivian (Perkins) Jacobson. He was raised in Necedah and attended Necedah Grade School and High School. After school, he began his career with the Chicago NorthWestern Railroad. From 1951 to 1959, Jake proudly served his country in the United States Army, returning afterward to continue his work with the railroad.

On December 30, 1960, Jake was united in marriage to Sadah Pearl Sparby at Arkdale Trinity Lutheran Church. Together, they made their home in Arkdale, Wisconsin. Together, they were blessed with three children.

Jake married LaVerne Truex on November 7, 2009.

Jake had many passions throughout his life. He loved hunting, fishing—especially trips to Canada—woodworking, and aviation. He earned his private pilot’s license and even restored an airplane, a project that brought him great pride. He was a founding member of the Old Farmers Antique Club where he enjoyed working on tractors and hit and miss engines. He also remained dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Great Northern Railroad.

Jake’s memory will be cherished by his children: Jacob (Jodie) Jacobson of Mauston, WI; Kathy (Ken) Bork of Friendship, WI; and Paula (Terry Foulk) Jacobson. He is further survived by his grandchildren: Christopher (Marisa Miller) Jacobson, Brittney (Chris) Clements, Katie (Jesse Williams) Jacobson, Chase (Brittany) Jacobson, Ian (Shawna Gibeaut) Jacobson, Mallory (Jacob) Servais, Luke (Summer) Jacobson, Annie (Jared) Litty, Kade Alt, Alesha (Jacob) Tennie, Faith (Jacob) Soule, and Kyler Bork; as well as 13 great-grandchildren, 7 bonus great-grandchildren, siblings: Glen Jacobson, Carol (John) Buttner, Emily (Robert) Bethke. Jake is further survived LaVern’s daughter, Rita (Dale) Kolstad, and her children: Tara (Marc) Pernacciaro and Heather (Brent) Frank and families.

Stoughtenger Named New Assistant Principal at Mauston High School

Earlier this summer Randy Gyllin was named the new Principal at Mauston High School.  Mike Stoughtenger has now been named the assistant principal at Mauston High School.  Stoughtenger will officially serve as the assistant principal for Mauston High School and iLead Charter School as well as Principal of Lemonweir Academy.  Stoughtenger previously served as a Middle School Science teacher, Dean of Students at the Middle School, as well as Athletic Director at Olson Middle School.  Stoughtenger also served as the head varsity baseball coach at Mauston from 2017-2024. Stoughtenger says he is looking forward to the opportunity. 

Adams County Drug & Gun Bust

On June 25, 2025 the Adams County Sheriff’s Office served search warrants at three separate residences in Adams County. Locations included the 400 block of Raymond St. in Village of Friendship, the 1400 block of Evergreen Ave in the Town of Easton and 1000 block of Fern Ave in the Town of Springville. This was a coordinated effort related to recent drug activity.

Throughout all three locations the following items were discovered; over 40 grams of Methamphetamine, over 40 grams THC, 2.94 grams of Fentanyl, 1.23 grams of Cocaine, multiple items of drug paraphernalia including smoking devices and scales, a short-barreled shotgun, two hand guns, ammunition and cash.

Multiple subjects were taken into custody or will have charges referred to the Adams County District Attorneys Office. Some of those charges include:

Cory Pagel, age 31 of Adams, WI – Possession of Firearm by a Felon, Possession of Short-Barreled Shotgun and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Torrey Akkerman, age 40 of Friendship, WI – Possession with intent to deliver Meth, Possession of THC, Maintain Drug Trafficking Location, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Prescription Drugs without a Valid Prescription

Elizabeth Brigman, age 35 of Friendship, WI – Possession with intent to deliver Meth, Possession of THC, Maintain Drug Trafficking Location, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Possession of Prescription Drugs without a Valid Prescription

Joseph Baker, age of 31 Wis. Rapids, WI – Obstructing an Officer

Alexander Mcallister, age 26 of Friendship, WI – Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Felony Bail Jumping

Sam Smith, age 58 of Friendship, WI – Possession of Meth, Possession of THC and Maintain Drug Trafficking Location

Ryan Gandee age 31 of Friendship, WI – Possession of Meth, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Dean Best, age 50 of Grand Marsh, WI – Possession of Meth, Possession of THC, Possession of Fentanyl, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Maintain Drug Trafficking Location

Jessica Ambrose, age 36 of Grand Marsh, WI – Possession of Meth, Possession of THC, Possession of Cocaine, Possession of Drug Paraphernalia, Maintain Drug Trafficking Location

Jesse Stone, age 18 of Grand Marsh, WI – Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

The Adams County Sheriff’s Office was assisted by members of the Central Wisconsin Drug Task Force, Adams County Health and Human Services and Lifestar Ambulance.

Woman Arrested for 4th Offense OWI in Monroe County

Cynthia Anne Palbicke, 62 years of age, from Pell Lake Wisconsin has been arrested by the
Wisconsin State Patrol Tomah Post for operating a motor vehicle under the influence, 4th offense.
On Monday, June 30th, 2025 a Wisconsin State Patrol Trooper made a routine traffic stop on a
vehicle for traveling over the posted speed limit. Upon making contact with the driver of the vehicle,
signs of impairment were observed. The trooper conducted standardized field sobriety tests on the
driver. The driver was subsequently arrested for Operating while intoxicated 4th offence

Juneau County Arrest Report 7-1-25

Vernon County Sheriffs Office Weekly Activity 6-22 thru 6-29

6/22    A Vernon County sheriff’s deputy and officers with the Kickapoo Valley Reserve responded to a business on State Highway 131 in the Village of Ontario for report of a male party swinging a canoe paddle at other patrons.  The individual was processed for Disorderly Conduct and Resisting or Obstructing an Officer and taken to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center.

6/22    Damage to a skid steer located on Thorson Lane was reported to a deputy.  Upon investigation, it appeared a stray bullet pierced the glass on the skid steer cab and traveled into the cab causing some damage.  No possible suspects were identified.

6/23    Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to a residence in the Town of Wheatland for report of an individual in possession of a firearm reportedly making suicidal statements.  Deputies were able to safely retrieve the firearm from the individual.  The individual was transported to an area hospital. 

6/23    A tree fell onto a car on High Avenue in Hillsboro causing temporary road blockage.  The Hillsboro Fire Department assisted on scene with removing the tree and cleaning up the roadway.  No one was injured.

6/24    A driver called to report they were involved in a car versus deer collision on US Highway 14 near East Smith Road in the Town of Viroqua.  The driver reported no injuries, and their car was still functional.  The driver was able to continue on their way.

6/24    Dispatch received a call about a lost hound dog in the Town of Liberty near Reed Drive.  The caller reported the dog named Bella was beige in color and was wearing a black and a red collar. 

6/24    A turtle was safely removed from the roadway on East Main Street in La Farge.

6/25    A deputy responded to a report of a semi that had failed to stop at an intersection before going off the road and into a cornfield near County Road F and County Road WW in the Town of Hillsboro.  The road was shut down for a short time while the semi was towed from the field.

6/25    Deputies responded to a call about a car that had crashed along a driveway on the 200 Block of East Main Street in the Village of La Farge.  It was reported the car was in the culvert and may have struck a tree.  The deputy noted signs of impairment, and the driver was taken to the Sheriff’s Office Detention Center and processed for Operating While Under the Influence-3rd Offense.

Adams County Pig Owner Gets his Bacon Back

A Vietnamese pot-bellied big named Bacon has been returned to its owner in Adams County.  Bacon was sizzling across the streets of 11th Ave. and Evergreen Drive.  Bacon was not a threat despite having tusks.  The owner is glad to have his bacon back.    

Mauston Police Dept. Travels to Green Bay for Lights of Christmas Ride

On Sunday, four members of the Mauston Police Department along with other law enforcement agencies traveled to Green Bay to participate in the Police Lights of Christmas Ride with the Lights fundraising event. Police Lights of Christmas distributes gift cards and backpacks filled with hygiene products to law enforcement agencies to distribute within their communities around Christmas.
