Mauston Wrestlers Split Home Triangular
The Mauston Golden Eagle Wrestling team stayed perfect in the South Central Conference whipping Wisconsin Dells 72-6 Thursday night. Mauston won 4/5 contested dual matches getting pins from Jayden Vanderhoof, Riley Fry, Austin Hunter, and Landyn Miller. Mauston would later fall 43-32 to a very good G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro team in a non-conference dual. Mauston trailed 29-3 but worked their way back into the dual to make it close after back to back pins by Austin Hunter and Preston Seebecker pulled Mauston within 34-26. Mauston also picked up victories from Espyn Pitts, Espyn Sweers, Hayden Gyllin and Jayden Vanderhoof in the dual loss. Mauston is now 13-2 on the season and 4-0 in South Central Conference action. Wisconsin Dells lost 84-0 to G-E-T/Melrose-Mindoro in the other part of the triangular. It was also part of the Mauston Hall of Fame night where Leo Cyz was inducted into the Mauston wrestling Hall of Fame.

Barribeau, Gordon J. “Tush” Age 84 of Adams
Gordon J. Barribeau, lovingly known as “Tush,” passed away peacefully at his home in Adams, Wisconsin, on Sunday, December 22.
Born in Hermansville, MI on October 29, 1940, he was the son of the late Harvey and Irene (Ayotte) Barribeau. He was also preceded in death by his three brothers, Ronald, Lloyd, and Gary.
Gordon was a dedicated worker in the construction trades, specializing in cold storage buildings which he retired from in 2000. Upon retirement, relocated from St. Francis, WI to their part-time home in Adams, WI, where many years were enjoyed living amongst nature of Sand County. Gordon worked seasonal jobs at Chula Vista and Wagner & Alsum Farms as a truck driver harvesting potatoes for the past eight years.
Gordon was proud of his achievements playing the position of guard for his high school basketball team, winning the 1957 district championship and U.P. class E championship. A lover of nature, enthusiast of his scooter, tractors, ATV, and especially Peterbilt potato truck. He enjoyed the camaraderie of coworkers and easily made all those around him laugh. He was a member of United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local UBC 344 and a member of St. Joseph Parish in Friendship, WI.
Gordon is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Maria; his son Mitchell Barribeau (Lisa); his daughter MarnieAnn Polkky (John); and six cherished grandchildren: Joe, Jenah, Riley, Makenzie, CamrynLee, and Conner, brothers Harlan (Marian) and Roland (Laurel), brother-in-law, Bob Bembenek, Sr. and many loved nieces and nephews, and beloved companion dog, Fannie.
A memorial Mass and celebration of life will be held at a later date in Hermansville, MI.

Vehicle vs Buggy Accident near Hillsboro
Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports on Wednesday
evening, December 25, 2024, at approximately 6:00 PM, a motor vehicle collided with a
horse-drawn buggy on State Highway 82, near Pine Avenue, rural Hillsboro, in the Town of
Union.
Lydia E. M. Thompson, age 22, of rural Sparta, WI, and Jaydon Alan Shea, age 20, of La
Farge, WI were the occupants of a 2011 Chevrolet Cruze passenger car traveling east on
State Highway 82. The vehicle struck a westbound buggy head-on, in the westbound lane,
on a curve.
Henry F. Bontrager, age 29, and Ruth J. Bontrager, age 29, both of rural Hillsboro, WI,
occupied the horse-drawn vehicle and were both ejected from the buggy which came to
rest in the roadway. The passenger car went off the north side of the roadway and traveled
down an embankment where it came to rest.
Lydia Thompson, Jaydon Shea, and Ruth Bontrager were transported to Gundersen St.
Joseph’s Hospital, in Hillsboro, WI, by La Farge Area Ambulance. Henry Bontrager was
pronounced dead at the scene by Vernon County Coroner Betty Nigh. Ruth Bontrager was
later transferred to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse, WI.
The horse also died because of the crash.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office at the scene were the La Farge Fire Department, La Farge Area
Ambulance, Wisconsin State Patrol Technical Reconstruction Unit, and the Town of Union,
and the Vernon County Coroner’s Office. Several concerned citizens stopped to render aid
and protect the scene until emergency personnel arrived. Gundersen Air was also
requested but were unable to fly due to weather conditions.
Bilek, Barabara A. Age 70 formerly of Mauston
Barbara A. Bilek, 70 formerly of Mauston passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at Wellington Place in Wisconsin Rapids.
Barbara was born on September 14, 1954 in Hillsboro, Wisconsin, the daughter of Martin J. and Betty Bilek.
At the age of three she lost her vision due to a surgical error which left her blind. In spite of all the trials that she endured, Barbara still enjoyed being with her family and friends. She also loved traveling, visiting Hawaii, Graceland, Nashville, Branson, Lambeau Field to watch her beloved Green Bay Packers on more than one occasion. She even had the opportunity to dip her toes into the Atlantic Ocean on her travels.
Barbara is survived by her siblings Gary Bilek of Norfolk, VA, Carol (Dennis) Schrank of Reedsburg, Steven Bilek of Loganville, Anthony “Tony” (Virginia) Bilek of LaFarge, her nieces and nephews Rhonda (Keith) Kelly, Thomas (Teresa) Davis, Stephen (Andi) Bilek, Aaron (Anna) Bilek, Jason (Melissa) Bilek, Jeremy Bilek, Jennifer Bilek, Kayla Bilek,and Britta Deaton (Stephen McNelly), many great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. She is also survived by many close cousins.
In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by one brother David (Bugsy)Bilek.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, December 28, 2024,at St. Theresa Catholic Church, Union Center where friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until time of service.
Burial will be at St. Theresa Catholic Cemetery.
Her family is finding comfort in the fact that even though she spent her life in the dark she’s now able to see the Light.
