Hillsboro Boys Push Past Viroqua
The Hillsboro Tigers boys basketball team held off a feisty Viroqua Blackhawks team Monday night garnering a 56-50 victory. The game was tied at 22 at halftime. Hillsboro got a team high 16points from sophomore Braun Jirschele, while Malekai Simpson returned to the lineup to add 12points including some clutch free throws down the stretch. Miles Ravenscroft added 10points for the Tigers. Viroqua was led by Freshman Noah Schwarz who had a game high 23points while Kolten Peterson added 18. Hillsboro improves to 5-4 on their season while Viroqua drops to 3-5. Hillsboro will host New Lisbon Thursday night.
Hillsboro Man Arrested for Domestic Violence
Smallwood, age 37, of rural Hillsboro, WI.
On Saturday morning, January 3rd , 2026, at approximately 12:30 AM, the Sheriff’s Office 911
Dispatch Center received a report of domestic violence at a residence on State Highway 33, rural
Hillsboro, WI, in the Town of Hillsboro.
The suspect left the scene prior to officers’ arrival but was later located by an officer with the
Hillsboro Police Department, in the City of Hillsboro. The suspect, identi?ed as James Ray
Smallwood Sr., age 37, of rural Hillsboro, was taken into custody, and booked for:
1) § 940.19(1) – Battery
2) § 947.01(1) – Disorderly Conduct
3) § 940.235(1) – Strangulation and Suffocation
4) § 943.01(1) – Criminal Damage to Property
5) § 946.49(1)(a) – Bail Jumping–Misdemeanor
6) § 946.41(1) – Resisting or Obstructing an Officer
7) § 346.63(1)(b) – Operating with Prohibited Alcohol Concentration
Smallwood appeared in Vernon County Circuit Court on Monday, January 5th, at 11:00 AM, and
bond was set at $500.00 Cash. He is due back in court on January 7th, at 10:00 AM.
Smallwood is also facing charges of Operating While Revoked and Ignition Interlock Device
Tampering/Failure to Install/Violate Court Order. These charges were ?led on August 5th, 2025,
and Smallwood signed a $1,000.00 Signature Bond on the same day.
A charge is merely an accusation. James Smallwood is presumed innocent unless and until
proven guilty in court.
In addition to assistance from Hillsboro and Viroqua Police, Sheriff Torgerson would like to thank
the Juneau, Monroe, Richland, and Sauk County Sheriff’s Offices for alerting their teams of the
incident. Thanks to the 911 dispatchers’ effective communication with officers and deputies in
the ?eld, this incident was resolved expeditiously.
I am grateful that our team is very well trained to investigate incidents of domestic violence.
Support from Vernon County End Abuse Response Team (HEART) volunteers is available to all
victims once the scene is rendered safe. Follow-up is provided by the Vernon County Domestic
Abuse Project Coordinator with further victim assistance from the District Attorney’s Office.

Mile Bluff Welcomes First Baby of 2026!

Throughout the pregnancy, Hailie was supported by certified nurse midwife Lyn Wedyke. During delivery, both Lyn and Dr. Allegra Ponshock provided care and support alongside the dedicated team at Mile Bluff’s Birthing Center.
As Mile Bluff’s first baby of the year, Harper received a special welcome package that included a $50 VISA gift card from Mile Bluff Medical Center, a $25 savings account from Bank of Mauston, a gift certificate for her first prescription from Mile Bluff Pharmacy, and a one-year subscription to the Juneau County Star-Times.

Fell, Robin Luke Age 60 of Friendship
Robin Luke Fell, age 60, of Friendship, Wisconsin, passed away peacefully on Friday, January 2, 2026, at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse, Wisconsin.
Memorial services will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, at Roseberry’s Funeral Home in Friendship, Wisconsin, with Pastor Terri Skildum officiating. Visitation will be held from 10:30 a.m. until the time of service on Saturday at the funeral home. Interment will take place at Mt. Repose Cemetery in Friendship at a later date.
Robin was born on January 20, 1965, in Madison, Wisconsin. He grew up in Oregon, Wisconsin, and moved with his family to Adams County in 1969, where he spent the remainder of his life. From a young age, Robin was known for his strong work ethic and dedication. As a teenager, he held several jobs, including running a bait shop at Herb’s Standard Station and working at Wallendahl Supply. He later worked for Scott’s Construction and other road construction companies.
Robin spent over 20 years working for Premo Construction and most recently worked for Fenner’s Excavating Company for the past four years. He took great pride in his work and genuinely enjoyed going to work each day.
Robin was a board member of the Sand County Turkey Talkers. He was also a dedicated public servant. At the age of 17, under the encouragement and guidance of Tom Robertson, he joined the Adams Volunteer Fire Department, where he served his community faithfully for over 10 years.
Robin enjoyed camping with his family and friends, and was always happy to lend a helping hand to anyone that needed help.
Robin is survived by the love of his life, Sheila Smedbron; his mother, Gloria Hays; his brother, Joel (Brenda) Fell; his sister, Rhonda (Thomas) Kops; his step-brother, Ronald (Terry) Hays; his step-sisters, Sarah Vernig and Kathy (Fred) Brechlin; and a very special aunt, Lisa (Dale) Moller. He is further survived by many uncles, aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, other relatives, friends and his beloved dog and constant companion, Pearl.
He was preceded in death by his father, Ronald Fell; his sister, Sandra; his step-father, Harry Hays; his step-brother, Jason Hays; and his grandparents.

Mauston Girls Open Up 2026 With Blowout Victory Over Tomah
The Mauston Girls Varsity rang in 2026 with a Happy New Year on Friday night as they played the Tomah Timberwolves.
The final score was 66-26 with the Lady eagles having 4 players in double figures and three of those with double doubles.
Bre Heller lead all scorers with 18 points, 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and 3 blocked shots. The other double doubles came from Caitlin Lavold who had 15 points, 11 rebounds, 5 assists and 1 steal, while Crimson Hansen had 10 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal and rounding out the double digit scoring Ella Franek put up 10 points to go along with her 6 rebounds, 4 assists and a steal.
Mauston played a really nice all around team game coming off the break, next up is the first away game of the new year as they travel to Baraboo on Tuesday the 6th to take on the Thunderbirds.

Lankey, Richard H. Age 90 of Rural Wonewoc
Richard H. Lankey, age 90 years, of rural Wonewoc, Wisconsin, passed away on Friday, January 2, 2026 at his home.
He was born on June 14, 1935 in Hillsboro, the son of Homer and Alice (Gehri) Lankey. Dick grew up in the Wonewoc area, attending St. Paul’s Lutheran Grade School and graduating from the Wonewoc High School.
Richard was united in marriage to ReDonna Radtke on September 12, 1953 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wonewoc.
Early on, Dick had a canned milk route and then drove semi for Korth Transfer for many years. Dick and ReDonna moved to their farm in the Town of Woodland in 1964, they began farming and milking cows, continued milking until 1997. In 1973, they built a new barn and expanded their herd. The main farms were sold in 1988. Also in 1988, Dick then started Lankey Custom Bagging Rental providing silage bagging services in the area. ReDonna passed away on August 6, 2002.
Dick was very much a family man, enjoying many times with children and grandchildren and also an active person in the community. He served on several St. Paul’s Lutheran Church Boards, the Town of Woodland Board, for several years as Chairman of the Fire Association in Wonewoc.
He also enjoyed his life in the country on the farm, watching the abundance of wildlife throughout the seasons. Country Music was also a favorite, even enjoying trips to Nashville.
On December 9, 2009, Richard married Sherryl Roehling and enjoyed spending time together. She preceded him in death on August 28, 2021.
Survivors include his children, Mark (Jodi) Lankey and Mary (Patrick) Shore; Sherry’s son, Josh (Lisa) Roehling and family; grandchildren, Mindy (Toby) Boldon, Austin Shore, and Justin (Andrea) Haugh; great grandchildren, Ella & Rhett Boldon, Makenna Haugh, Izebell Haugh and Riley Bolden and sister, Jolene Feddersen.
In addition to his wives, ReDonna and Sherryl, he was preceded in death by his Parents; grandchildren, Lucas Lankey, Nicole Boldon, Brock Haugh and Chase Haugh; an unborn great grandson, Christian Boldon and brother, Russell Lankey.
Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, January 8, 2026 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Wonewoc. Burial will be in the St. Paul’s Lutheran Cemetery in Wonewoc. A time of visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 7, 2025 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Picha Funeral Home in Wonewoc and at the Church on Thursday starting at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church.
The family would like to express their appreciation to Denise Huntley, a family friend and Agrace Hospice for their personal care giving to Dick these past weeks.
