Application forms are being sent to all homes with a notice to parents or guardians. To apply for free or reduced price meals or free milk, households must fill out the application and return it to the school (unless notified at the start of the school year that children are eligible through direct certification). Additional copies are available at the office in each school. The information provided on the application will be used for the purpose of determining eligibility and may be verified at any time during the school year by agency or other program officials. Applications may be submitted at any time during the year.
To obtain free or reduced price meals or free milk for children in a household where one or more household members receive FoodShare, Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations (FDPIR), or Wisconsin Works (W-2) cash benefits, list the FoodShare, FDPIR or W-2 case number, program name, list the names of all school children, sign the application, and return it to the school office.
For the school officials to determine eligibility for free or reduced price meals or free milk of households not receiving FoodShare, FDPIR or W-2 cash benefits, the household must provide the following information requested on the application: names of all household members, total number of household members, and the adult signing the application form must also list the last four digits of his or her Social Security Number or mark the box to the right of “Check if no SSN”. Also, the income received by each household member must be provided by amount and source (wages, welfare, child support, etc.).
Under the provisions of the free and reduced price meal and free milk policy, the Food Service Coordinator will review applications and determine eligibility. If a parent or guardian is dissatisfied with the ruling of the official, he/she may wish to discuss the decision with the determining official on an informal basis. If the parent/guardian wishes to make a formal appeal, he/she may make a request either orally or in writing to: Sue Goyette, Business Mananger, 510 Grayside Ave, Mauston, WI 53948, 608-847-5451, ext. 6681.
If a hearing is needed to appeal the decision, the policy contains an outline of the hearing procedure.
If a household member becomes unemployed or if the household size changes, the family should contact the school. Such changes may make the household eligible for reduced price meals or free meals or free milk if the household income falls at or below the levels shown above, and they may reapply at that time.
Children formally placed in foster care are also eligible for free meal benefits. Foster children may be certified as eligible without a household application. Households with foster children and non-foster children may choose to include the foster child as a household member, as well as any personal income available to the foster child, on the same application that includes their non-foster children.
The information provided by the household on the application is confidential. Public Law 103-448 limits the release of student free and reduced price school meal eligibility status to persons directly connected with the administration and enforcement of federal or state educational programs. Consent of the parent/guardian is needed for other purposes such as waiver of textbook fees.

Woman Med-Flighted After Motorcycle Crash Near Ontario
Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports late Saturday afternoon, August 2, 2025,
at approximately 4:45 PM, the Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center received a report of a motorcycle crash
on State Highway 33, near Taylor Valley Road, rural Ontario, WI, in the Town of Whitestown.
Sabrina Marie Sanderson, age 24, of Lannon, WI, was operating a 2025 Kawasaki EX650 motorcycle
traveling south and struck a guardrail in a curve. The operator was ejected and the riderless motorcycle
crossed the roadway and struck an embankment on the opposite side.
Sanderson sustained substantial injuries, was transported to Ontario’s town square to rendezvous with
Emplify Air, and flown to Gundersen Health System (Emplify) in La Crosse, WI.
The sheriff’s deputy investigating the crash said, “The full-face helmet she was wearing almost certainly
saved her life when her face hit the guardrail.”
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office were the Ontario Fire Department, Ontario Emergency Medical Service
ambulance, and Emplify Air helicopter.
The crash remains under investigation by the Sheriff’s Office.

2025 HS Football Previews – Ripon Tigers
Ripon Tigers
2024 Record: 1-8 (1-6 South Central Conference)
Head Coach: Andrew Salgrad (1-8 Record at Ripon)
Mike’s 2025 Projected Record 1-8 (1-6 South Central Conference)
Players to Watch: QB/LB Nathan Hanson RB/LB Eric Cumber WR/LB Dylan Martyna WR/DB Noah Michael OL/DL Jamason Briske
Team Preview: Ripon is still under rebuild mode under the direction of 2nd year head coach Andrew Selgrad. Last year Ripon won just a game against a depleted Mauston team. Ripon lost its leading rusher, receiver and tackler from last year. They do return quarterback Nathan Hanson (36-102-16-484 8tds), with a year of experience the hope is he plays better and helps lead this Ripon team. Eric Cumber (63-522 4tds) is back after leading the team in touchdowns last season. Noah Michaels is the returning leading tackler with 41tackles last year while Jamason Briske is also back after notching a pair of sacks last season. It will be an uphill climb again for Ripon but I believe coach Selgrad will have them eventually going in the right direction in Ripon.
Key to Success: Growth. Coach Selgrad has had success at other schools and is trying to rebuild this Ripon football team. If Ripon can grow on last years’ experience they should be able to build this program and have success hopefully for their sake sooner than later.
Game to watch: Week 6 Friday September 26th at Mauston
Ripon has had just one victory in the last two years and it came last season against Mauston. This will be a battle of two rebuilding teams. Mauston will look for revenge while Ripon will try to knock off Mauston for a 2nd straight season.

Kissinger, Jean E. Age 84 of Arkdale
Jean E. (Birch) Kissinger, age 84, of Arkdale, Wisconsin passed away on Friday, July 25, 2025, surrounded by her family under the loving and heartfelt care of the medical staff of Wisconsin Rapids Riverview Hospital. Born on September 15, 1940, to the late William and Ethel (MacDonald) Birch in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Jean graduated from Waukesha Catholic Memorial High School with the class of 1958. With the union of her first marriage, she had three children, Sue, Cindy and Jerry. Jean raised her children, as a single mother. She worked for Pewaukee Stark Candy Company, Waukesha County Health Department, then worked many years for Waukesha County Human Services until retiring in 1995. On April 15, 1989 she married a long time friend, Bob Kissinger, who became the love of her life. They were married and resided in the City of Waukesha then moved permanently to the weekend/vacation lake home in the Town of Rome. After retirement their final move was to Arkdale.
Following Jean’s retirement she volunteered her time reading to young children in the local elementary school. She loved children and always wanted to work in an orphanage. She also volunteered her time with the Department of Aging of Adams County and in her earlier years she enjoyed and taught line dancing with her husband Bob. A few of her favorite hobbies were her daily devotions, praying for her family and friends, quilting, Tai Shi, gathering at the town hall for a weekly game of bunco, or creating a new community involved activity, jumping on the four wheeler or golf cart for a ride in the woods. Jean was an avid reader, exchanging books with family members. In her earlier years she hunted deer alongside Bob, which later developed into happily hosting the hunters year after year. Most of all, she loved spending time with or having family around. She especially loved Christmas time when we would all gather together. If you couldn’t make it, she would make her way to you. She was very involved with her family with daily and weekly calls or text messages, not missing what was going on in their lives. She was so proud of each and every one of them. If she couldn’t be at a ball game or activity, she was online watching. If there was something going on in the family, she would do her best to get there.
She was a member of Lake Area Christian Fellowship in the Town of Rome and had recently returned to her faith as a Catholic at Sacred Heart Church in Nekoosa. Jean will be lovingly remembered by her family and friends as a kind, strong, giving person who was always there for you, ready to listen. She had a strong faith in God. She continually amazed her loved ones.
Jean is survived by her children: Sue Smaaland, Cindy (Kurt) Knutson, Jerry (Rachel) Hoeppner, Chad Kissinger, Todd Kissinger, grandchildren: Billy (Joanna) O’Malley, Donny (Natalie) O’Malley, Bryan O’Malley, Dan (Jenny) Knutson, Jenessa (Matt) Eales, Nicki Hoepner, Jessica Hoeppner, Alex Thomas (fiance’ Lizzy Leidel), Brooke Thomas, Ashlynn Hoeppner, Codey (Ashley) Kissinger, Sheena Kissinger, 11 great grandchildren, sister MaryJo Kaatz, brother-in-law George Balles, sister-in-laws: Lorie Birch and Karen (Mark) Holzwordt, many nieces and nephews. 2025 HS Football Preview: Wonewoc-Center/Weston 8-Man Football Team
Wonewoc-Center/Weston SilverWolves 8-Man Football Team
2024 Record: 1-7 (1-6 Ridge & Valley 8-Man Conference)
Head Coach: Jake McGlynn
Mike’s 2025 Projected Record 3-5 (2-5 Ridge & Valley 8-Man Conference)
Players to Watch: QB Jack Byrdy RB/LB Brady Westphal WR/LB Gavin Olson WR/DL Cam Thellefsen OL/DL Trevor Westphal
Team Preview: This will be the final run for the Wonewoc-Center/Weston Co-Op before Weston joins Ithaca in a co-op. The Silverwolves have a chance to be a .500 football team in my opinion this season. They have some talented skill players that could make a difference. Jack Byrdy (35-94-10-372 3tds) is back at quarterback with a season of experience. Brady Westphal (103-579 5tds rushing) is back at running back along with Gavin Olson (55-199 1TD Rushing) who could lead to a dynamic backfield. Cam Thellefsen (8-159 2tds receiving) adds size and athleticism to the receiving core. Trevor Westphal is a big kid on the interior for Wonewoc-Center/Weston co-op. Olson led the team in tackles a season ago while Thellefsen led the team in TFL’s. The Wolves will have to block for their talented skill players. If the blocking arrives this team could have a .500 or better season.
Key to Success: Blocking. In 8-man football you don’t need to find as many bodies up front but you still need a few to get the job done. The Silver-Wolves lost Logan Peterson and Reid Byrdy to graduation they were two of their stalwarts up front last year. If they can have some blockers up front their skill players have a chance to have a lot of success.
Game to watch: Week 5 Friday September 19th at Belmont
I have WC/W finishing at 3-5 on their season. Belmont is a winnable game and could put the Silver-Wolves at the .500 mark or better. This will be a pivotal game in the middle of their season.
Wonewoc-Center/Weston Silver-Wolves games on WRJC Radio: Week 1 Thursday August 21st North Crawford at Weston HS (NOW92.1FM & WRJC.com)
