Free Throws Lift Nekoosa Over Necedah in Boy Regional
The Nekoosa Papermakers got to the free throw line early and often as they triumphed over Necedah 50-42 Tuesday night in a WIAA D4 Boys Basketball Regional Quarter-final matchup. Nekoosa made 18-32 free throws in the victory. Fin Krcmar made 13-14 as part of his game high 23points for the Papermakers. Necedah struggled to get much going offensively in the loss. Luke Murphy led them in scoring with 11 while Konrad Borym added 10points. Necedah finishes their season at 6-15. Nekoosa improves to 6-18 and will move on to take on top seed Lomira Friday night.
Mauston/Necedah’s Hansen Falls Just Short of Podium at State Wrestling Tournament
Mauston/Necedah wrestler Jaren Hansen went 2-2 at the WIAA State Tournament winning his opening round match vs via upset 14-2 over Decaon Ward of Greendale before falling to eventual state runner up Preston Krueger of New London in the quarterfinals. Hansen defeated Adam Foss of Chetek-Weyerhaeuser in his opening consolation matchup but would fall to Leland Havens of Mount Horeb-Barneveld in the next round and fall one spot short of a podium appearance. Espen Pitts went 0-2 at the State Tournament but both him and Hansen and great seasons for the Mauston/Necedah wrestling co-op.

Brookwood Uses Big Run to Defeat Hillsboro and Move on in Girls Post-Season
The Brookwood Falcons Girls basketball team used a 24-0 run midway thru the game to pull away from Hillsboro 61-37. Brookwood’s zone defense caused plenty of havoc leading to a plethora of Hillsboro turnovers. Offensively Brookwood was led by the twin sister duo of Ruby and Reagan Muehlenkamp. Ruby led all scorers with 24points while Reagan added 18points. Stella Mack added 11 for the Falcons who improve to 15-10 on their season and will move on to play top seed Independence/Gilmanton Friday night. Hillsboro’s season comes to an end at 14-11. Aubryn Herritz led the Tigers with 13points.
Royall Boys Win 3rd Straight Outright SBC Championship
The Royall Panther boys basketball team claimed their 3rd straight outright Scenic Bluffs Conference Championship with a 76-68 victory over Bangor Monday night. Royall trailed by 2 at halftime but was able to attack the basket in the 2nd half and pulled ahead and hung on for the victory. John Muehlenkamp had a career game leading Royall in scoring with 19points but it was a team effort that saw 4 other players score in double figures for the Panthers. Dylan Velazquez scored 17points, Braxton Board had 14, Trey Wildes added 12points, and Bentley Rozek scored 10 off the bench. Bangor was led by Hayden Massman who had a game high 27points while Brody Edwards added 19, and Dayne Langrher added 18points. Royall finishes the conference season at 13-1 and improves to 20-3 on their season. Bangor falls to 11-3 in the conference and 14-9 overall.
New Lisbon Boys & Girls Both Win Monday Night
The New Lisbon Boys and Girls basketball teams both picked up non-conference wins Monday night. The Boys opened up action with a 72-42 victory over Port Edwards. Jameson Pfaff scored a game high 17points while Carter and Colby Pfaff each had 11points in the victory. The girls used a big 2nd half to pull off a 58-36 victory over La Farge. Keira Wilkinson had a game high 20points while Karey Edgerton added 10points. Both Rocket teams picked up their 8th wins of the season.
Mauston/Necedah Co-Op Send Pair of Wrestlers to State Tournament
The Mauston/Necedah wrestling co-op will send a pair of seniors to the WIAA D2 State Individual wrestling Tournament. Mauston’s Espen Pitts qualified by finishing 2nd at 144lbs. Pitts lost his finals match to GET/MM’s Brody Banse but bounced back to win his true 2nd place match against Port Edwards Keldon Casey to qualify for state. Necedah senior Jaren Hansen qualified by winning his semi-final match against Sawyer Van Horn of Ellsworth. Hansen lost his finals match to Jakob Soback of Spencer/Columbus/Granton but because Van Horn won his 3rd place match Hansen did not have to wrestleback and qualified for the state tournament. Mauston also qualified for the team sectional by finishing 5th as a team at the Osseo-Fairchild Super sectional. Mauston will wrestle Arcadia Saturday in Black River Falls.
Necedah Rallies Past Wonewoc-Center in Girls Basketball
The Necedah Cardinals girls basketball team rallied past Wonewoc-Center Thursday night winning 43-37 on their senior night. Necedah trailed 26-17 in the 2nd half but outscored the Wolves 26-11 the rest of the way to pick up their 5th victory of the year. Brienna Van Hoof led all scorers with 15points while senior Gianna Teumer added 8points. Wonewoc-Center was led by freshmen Peyton Wafle who had a team high 12. Necedah improves to 5-13 on the year and 2-10 in the Scenic Bluffs Conference. Wonewoc-Center remains winless in the conference at 0-12.
Bangor Holds Off Royall to Get Closer to 12th Straight Girls SBC Title
The Royall Panther girls basketball could not overcome turnovers and missed free throws in a 53-44 loss to Bangor Tuesday night. Bangor never trailed in the victory and led by as many as 10points multiple times only to see Royall come back each time to make it a game. Royall was able to get within 2points late in the game as Kayla Rick banked in a 3 to cut Bangors lead to 44-42 but Bangor broke the ensuing Panther pressure and earned a trip to the free throw line. The Cardinals split the free throws missing the back end but Royall could not secure the rebound losing it out of bounds. Bangor executed a perfect inbound pass that led to a Kennedy Hamilton lay in to put Bangor up 47-42 and they would not look back from there. Bria Gruen led all scorers with 21points for the Panthers while September Harris paced the Bangor offense with a team high 15points. The win allows Bangor to seize control of the conference as they are now 9-0 in Scenic Bluffs play while Royall drops to 9-2 in conference action. Royall will host Brookwood Friday night. Bangor will travel to Wonewoc-Center Friday.
Thellefsen, Landsinger Lead Wolves to 7th Win of Season
The Wonewoc-Center Wolves used a high scoring 2nd half to bury Coulee Christian 90-61 Monday night. The Wolves scored 51 points in the 2nd half alone. The Wolves had 4 players in double figures led by Cam Thellefsen 31points, Tatyn Landsinger 18points, Jack Byrdy 16points and Gavin Olson 12points. Coulee Christian hung around in the first half thanks to the scoring punch of Jaden Heesch who scored 15 of his team high 20points in the first half. Jaden is the great nephew of Mauston Superintendent and assistant Mauston Basketball coach Joel Heesch. Titus Trailer added 16points for the Eagles who drop to 0-9 on their season. Wonewoc-Center improves to 7-10 on their season. It’s the most win Wonewoc-Center has had in boys basketball since the 2018-2019 season.
Royall Boys Use Big 2nd Half to Blitz Past Necedah
The Royall Panthers used a strong 2nd half to pull away from Necedah Friday night winning 57-30 in Boys Scenic Bluffs Basketball action. Necedah hung around in the first half and cut the lead to 7 early in the 2nd half but from there Royall went on a 19-0 run to take complete control of the game. Trey Wildes had a big game for the Panthers scoring a game high 23points. Bentley Rozek added 8points for the Panthers in a rare start for the freshman. Luke Murphy led Necedah with 7points. Royall improves to 8-1 in the conference and 14-2 overall. Necedah drops to 2-6 in the conference and 3-8 overall. Royall will host Hillsboro this coming Thursday.
