Man Arrested After Refusing To Leave Hillsboro Business
Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports the arrest of Aaron Roger Miller, age 35, of rural Hillsboro, WI. Late Wednesday morning, July 10, 2024, at approximately 11:30 AM, the Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center received a report that Miller was refusing to leave a business in the city of Hillsboro, when asked by an employee to do so.
A deputy sheriff responded and upon further investigation, Miller was determined to be in violation of the rules of active community supervision through the Wisconsin Department of Corrections. Miller was arrested and booked into the Vernon County Detention Center for Parole Violation. He was released the following day and ordered to report to his supervising agent.
In June 2021, Aaron Roger Miller was convicted of 2nd Degree Sexual Assault of a Child in Washburn County and sentenced to ten years in prison. After serving a term of initial confinement, Miller was released in May 2024 on extended supervision.
The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office, Hillsboro Police Department, and the Wisconsin Department of Corrections.
Dump Truck Tips Over Near La Farge
Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports on Tuesday morning, July 9, 2024, at approximately 11:00 AM, the Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center was notified that a dump truck overturned on private property, in the town of Union. Carl Henry Haugrud, age 63, of rural Viola, WI was operating a 1991 International dump truck in rural La Farge, WI, unloading gravel. While traveling uphill and rounding a curve to the right, the dump truck tipped over and came to rest on its right (passenger) side.
Haugrud was wearing a seatbelt, was not injured, but extricated from the vehicle by the La Farge Fire Department.
Assisting the Sheriff’s Office were the La Farge Fire Department and La Farge Area Ambulance.
Motorcycle Accident Between Elroy & Hillsboro
Vernon County Sheriff Roy Torgerson reports a motorcycle crash occurred on Saturday afternoon, July 13, 2024, in rural Hillsboro/Elroy, WI, in the town of Hillsboro.
The Sheriff’s Office 911 Dispatch Center was notified of the crash, that resulted in two injuries, shortly before 3:00 PM.
Luke Michael Strandberg, age 24, of La Valle, WI was operating a 2013 Harley Davidson motorcycle southbound on County Road WW, approaching a “T” intersection for the east-west portion of County Road WW, near County Road F. Strandberg reported encountering sand or gravel on the roadway as he was slowing for the intersection. When it became apparent, he was unable to stop, Strandberg laid the motorcycle on its side. The motorcycle slid across the pavement and came to rest in a ditch.
Neither Stranberg nor his passenger, Payton Marie Omet age 23, also of La Valle, WI, were wearing helmets. Both were injured and transported to Gundersen St. Joseph’s in Hillsboro, by Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service. Omet was later transferred to a Madison, WI hospital.
Responding to the crash with the Sheriff’s Office were the Hillsboro Fire Department and Hillsboro Area Ambulance Service.
The incident remains under investigation by the Vernon County Sheriff’s Office.
McKinley, Gladys Age 91 of Friendship
Gladys McKinley, age 91, formerly of Friendship, passed away on July 3, 2024, with family by her side.
Gladys’ life journey began in 1932 in Arkdale, WI, where she was the 7th of 11 children born to Hans and Hilda Pedersen. She grew up on the family farm, along with brothers Norman, Roy, and Alden, and sisters Caroline Henriksen, Viola York, Virginia Chaffee, Esther Stevens, Myrtle Lecy, Verna Williams, and Florence Koehler. Gladys attended Adams-Friendship High School, where, as a member of the Class of 1950, she was an excellent student. Following graduation, she moved to Chicago and worked in the office of a large insurance company. She married Clinton (Bud) McKinley at Trinity Lutheran Church in Arkdale in 1952. They moved to Friendship, which was to be her beloved home for 68 years. Gladys and Bud were wonderful parents to a family of two children, Pam and Tom. Throughout her life, Gladys was devoted to her large family and many friends. She hosted memorable card parties and holiday meals over the years and was known as someone to be counted on in any time of need. Golfing, bowling, and snowmobiling were hobbies that she especially enjoyed. She was a longtime member of the VFW Auxiliary, Moundview Golf Club, Tucson Estates Ladies Golf League, and Tucson Estates Red Hat Society. Gladys’ primary career was as a bookkeeper, first at Roberts Motors, and, later at Shari Sales, where she eventually became a co-owner. In retirement, she enjoyed working part-time at the Times Reporter and Carole’s Fashion Delights. Gladys and Bud spent many happy winters at a desert home in Tucson, AZ. In 2020, Gladys made a new home at The Classic at Hillcrest Greens in Altoona, WI, where she resided until her passing.
Gladys was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, eight siblings, all of her brothers-in-law and sisters-in law, special nephews, and many cherished friends. Left to mourn her passing are her children: Pam (Matt) Brunner, and Tom (Sue), her grandchildren: Tony, and Sam (Andra) Brunner, Bridget (Marshall) and Kelly McKinley, sister Myrtle Lecy, and brother Alden Pedersen. She will also be greatly missed by several generations of nieces and nephews, as well as many friends and caregivers.
A memorial service will be held at 1:00 on Monday, July 29, 2024, at Trinity Lutheran Church, Arkdale, WI. Pastor Terri Skildum will officiate. Visitation will be at the church from 12:00 – 1:00. The family requests that memorials be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or to the Adams-Friendship Area Educational Foundation.
Noth, Lavonne G. Age 79 of Mauston
Lavonne G. Noth, 79, of Mauston, passed away peacefully with family at Our Senior Home Memory Care home on Monday evening, July 15, 2024. She was born on December 29, 1944, to Robert and Beverly Rediske, in Tomah, Wisconsin. She was united in marriage to Dean H. Noth, on August 28, 1965, in Tomah, Wisconsin.
She is survived by their six children, 14 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren, and three great grandchildren; two sisters and a sister-in-law; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins, son Robert (Ligaya) Noth and children Emmanuel and Alana; daughter Becky Noth; daughter Jeanne (Mark) Berg and children, Megan (Mike) Oppriecht and great grandchildren Audrey and Oliver, Brittany Berg, Natasha (Jacob Benson) Berg, and Isaac Berg; daughter Tammy (Daniel) Remington and children, Austin Remington, Jessica Kramer, Adam (Alora) Kramer and great grandson Weston, Crystal Cafferty, Jacob Cafferty, and Camron Cafferty; son Charles (Ruth) Noth and his children Kate-Lynn (Josh) Wrezinski, Savannah (Calvin) Pender, Mackenzie Noth, and Aiden Noth; and son John (Jill Frohmader) Noth; sister, Karen (Sydney) Jerome; sister Diane (Jerome) Scharrer; and sister-in-law, Carol Anne Noth.
She was predeceased by her husband, her parents, a niece Laura Antony, and granddaughter Kylee Noth, as well as many aunts and uncles.
Lavonne, nicknamed Bonnie, spent countless hours in the kitchen cooking and baking for her family which she loved to do and excelled. Many of the ingredients came for their expansive gardens and orchard where all sorts of berries, fruits and vegetables grew under their care. But most loved by Lavonne were the flower beds which circled the house and the songbirds that she faithfully fed throughout the year. She knew them all by name and passed that knowledge on to her children. She enjoyed traveling with a special liking for the deserts of the southwest states. She had a gift to gab which lent well to her profession of waitressing for many years, and later as she sold tickets for the Ducks and other attractions in the Wisconsin Dells. She liked to be where the action was and would be the first out on the dance floor at every opportunity that came along. She loved people and served others doing hospice for a while and assisted handicap people on traveling tours by bus. She lived a very full life and had a strong faith in God.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, July 27, 2024, at the Bethany Lutheran Church, 701 Grove Street, Mauston, Wisconsin, with visitation from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a brief service and a light meal and fellowship.
Peterson, Sharon Marie Age 38 of Tomah
Sharon Marie Peterson, passed away on July 12, 2024, at the age of 38, due to an unexpected accident. Sharon was born on September 5, 1985, in Madison, Wisconsin, to the parents of Jeffrey and Sharmaine (Murphy) Peterson. Sharon graduated from Tomah High School in 2004. Sharon’s thirst for knowledge and her passion for helping others led her to pursue further education at Blackhawk Technical College, where she earned her certification as a CNA. Later, Sharon’s love for animals inspired her to continue her education in Veterinarian Tech Schooling, further. Sharon Married Willard “Tony” Lee King Jr. on June 26th, 2015, in Mauston, WI and they later seperated.
Sharon was an avid lover of the great outdoors, Sharon found solace and joy in fishing, hunting, and camping. Her passion for nature was matched only by her creative spirit, which she expressed through her love of Diamond arts and crafts. Sharon’s home was a reflection of her artistic talents and her deep appreciation for the beauty of the world around her.
Above all, Sharon was a devoted family woman, whose happiest moments were spent surrounded by her loved ones. Her home was a haven of warmth, laughter, and unconditional love. Sharon’s presence was a comforting constant in the lives of her family, and her memory will be cherished as a guiding light of love and laughter.
Sharon is survived by her husband, Willard “Tony” Lee King Jr., her significant other Allen Carstensen, her children, Jessica Wand, Isabella King, Sandra King, and Vernon King, her parents, Jeff and Sharmaine Peterson, of Camp Douglas, WI., a sister, Amy (John) Peterson, of North Freedom, WI. Her family circle extended to include her father-in-law, Tony King Sr. of Illinois, sister-in-law, Tuvra Webster of Arkansaw, WI. and brother-in-law, Dustin Walters of Duran, WI. Sharon’s life was further enriched by the love and antics of her nieces and nephews, Anthony, Ally, Quinton, Amy, and Christopher, along with many other adored nieces, nephews, cousins, aunts, uncles, and extended family members. Sharon is preceded in death by her beloved maternal and paternal grandparents, her four angelic children, Alan, Jeffery, Joseph, and Dorothy, and her mother-in-law, Donna Riley. Her legacy of love, kindness, and joy will live on through the countless lives she touched.
As we bid farewell to Sharon Marie Peterson, we celebrate the indelible mark she left on our hearts and the world. Her story does not end here, for her spirit lives on in the laughter of her children, the beauty of the natural world she so adored, and the countless memories shared with those she loved.

Anderson, Carl Age 67 of Friendship
CARL ANDERSON, age 67, of Friendship, WI, passed away unexpectedly at home on Friday, July 12, 2024. Visitation services will be held on Wednesday, August 7th from 4 – 7 pm and Thursday, August 8th from 10 – 11 am. Celebration of Life to follow at 11 am, all at Roseberry’s Funeral Home 512 Main Street, Friendship, WI. A luncheon will follow the Celebration at the VFW Post #6279 172 N Linden Street, Adams, WI 53910.
Carl Anderson was born in Madison, WI on May 30, 1957, to Charles R. and Patricia M. (Turner) Anderson. He married Mary Walter on November 14, 2020. Carl served in the United States Air Force between 1976-1980, working with the White House Communications staff in Washington DC. He traveled with White House staff to many places under two administrations. Carl had the honor of introducing the “President of the United States” on one occasion. He continued working on computer communication systems as a career for many years, moving to Minnesota, Illinois, and eventually back to Wisconsin.
Carl’s core was his Christian faith. He was raised attending church with his family and in the past few years became increasingly more confident displaying his faith. He faithfully attended all church services, was actively involved in men’s Bible studies, and helping in any way possible at his current church. Mornings would find him reading his daily devotions, drinking his tea with George sitting on his lap. Carl was a fun-loving man who shared in a lifetime of treasured memories with family and many friends. He had a soft spot for his cats, especially Herbie and George. There is an emptiness now in our hearts. Carl was a motorcycle enthusiast, having taken numerous road trips across the country with his Dad, uncle Earl, and cousin David. He covered over 300,000 miles. Of course, this included a few trips to Sturgis, South Dakota. In recent years, he and Mary would hit the road frequently on their cycles, riding several multi-state trips. Carl became an enthusiastic member of Castle Rock HOG chapter in Mauston. For all motorcycle enthusiasts, please consider riding your motorcycles to the services, to honor Carl.
Carl was an avid outdoorsman, hunting deer and turkey, and spending much time outdoors on his multi-acre homestead.
Carl will be dearly missed by his Wife, Mary, of Friendship; Sister: Cynthia (Mike) Peterson of Oregon, WI; Niece: Erin (Adam) Chisman of Merida, Yucatan, Mexico; Niece and Godchild: Annie Peterson of Las Vegas, Nevada; Great Nieces: Elisa (Joel) and Natalee Kaether, and Odessa Chisman; former Brother-in-Law: Bernard Peterson Jr of Hillsboro, WI; Godchild: Amanda (Anthony) Zimmerman; Carl’s First Cousins: James Wylie of Texas, David (Angela) Wylie of Winnsboro, TX, Daniel (Laura) Anderson of Richland Center, Denise (Larry) Rudersdorf of Pulaski, Doreen (Jason) Fehlauer of Watertown, Jerome Johanning of Rochelle, IL, Eric (Lori) Johanning of Rochelle, IL, Roger (Patty) Johanning of Rochelle, IL, Brian Johanning of Rochelle, IL, and John Anderson of Almena. Mary’s Children: Jeannie (Aaron) Symicek of Cottage Grove, MN, Katie (Jason) Karl of Marshfield; Grandchildren: Riley and Samantha Symicek and Brynlee and Hazel Karl.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles: Mary and William Wylie, Wanda and Darwyn Anderson, Earl Turner, Kenneth and Kathleen Anderson. First cousins: Dennis Anderson, Dianne Rudersdorf, Kirk Johanning, Pamela Schmidt.

Former Monroe County Sheriff Deputy Charged
The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office is releasing information related to criminal charges that
have been brought against one of its former deputies for an incident in La Crosse, WI.
In May, the Sheriff’s Office was made aware of allegations of possible misconduct by Aaron
Yang related to domestic disturbance in the City of Sparta.
At the onset of these allegations, the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office placed Deputy Yang on
administrative leave. Sparta Police Department investigated the domestic disturbance and
charges related to it were sent to the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office for review. The
District Attorney’s Office found there was insufficient evidence to sustain that a crime was
committed by Yang related to that incident.
While investing that incident, additional allegations of illegal sexual activity came about
related to the incident that occurred in early 2023.
The La Crosse Police Department continued to investigate the allegations of illegal sexual
activity that occurred in early 2023, which was prior to Yang being employed by the Sheriff’s
Office.
On June 27 th , prior to completion of the internal investigation that was being conduct by the
Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, Deputy Yang resigned.
On 7/2/24 Aaron Yang was charged in La Crosse County Court for the incident that occurred in
La Crosse in early 2023.
Johnson/Schumann, Jackaline Jane Age 86 of Elroy
Jackaline Jane (Preuss) Johnson/Schumann, age 86, passed away peacefully at Spring Brook in Onalaska on Tuesday, July 16, 2024.
She was born on May 27, 1938 in Elroy to Arthur and Fannie (Searles) Preuss.
Jackie married John Johnson on April 6, 1957. John preceded her in death on July 2, 1976. She later married Kenneth Schumann on May 23, 1980 and Kenny preceded her in death on June 6, 2011.
Jackie worked on the family farm growing up, then she went to work for the Elroy School in the office. After she married, she was a housewife until John’s death, then she worked for Jensen’s Market in Elroy, Hike n’ Bike, farmed again, and at Heritage Manor.
She volunteered at the Elroy Legion Hall cooking. Both Jackie and Kenny volunteered for God’s Feeding People and the Elroy Fair, later Jackie drove for meals on wheels.
She is a member of the Elroy United Methodist Church and American Legion Auxiliary. She enjoyed playing cards, spending time with family and friends, planting flowers and cooking. She was a good cook.
Survivors include her children, Jeff (Sue), Jim (LaLani), Judy (Dennis), June (Wyatt); stepchildren, Kerry (Shelly), Chris (Paul), Carla (David); grandchildren, Troy, Tricia (Dennis), Nickie (Ryan), Mandi, John (Kim), Jacob, Allie (Martin), Jewel; step grandchildren, Jessica (Claudio), Zach, Justin, Brandon (Monica), Ethan, Cassie, Kyle (Mia), Kira and 16 Great Grandchildren.
Jackie was preceded in death by her parents; both husbands; sister, Doreen; son, Jerry; stepson, Kevin; stepdaughter, Colleen and friend, Mary Skinner.
She was assisted during the end by Gundersen Hospice and the Staff at Spring Brook Onalaska.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 at 11:00 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Elroy, with Pastor Jill Nowlen officiating. A time of visitation will be held on Monday, July 22, 2024 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Picha Funeral Home in Elroy and on Tuesday from 10 to 11 a.m. at the Church.
