MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Madison’s mayor is asking the general manager of the city’s transit service and the leader of the bus drivers’ union to work together to keep employees from earning more than $100,000.
Mayor Dave Cieslewicz says Metro Transit is very well managed, but one driver was able to earn $159,258 and six others more than $100,000 in 2009 because of overtime rules.  The big paychecks come because of absenteeism and provisions in the union contract that limit the use of part-time drivers and gives senior employees who make the most money the first
opportunity for extra work.
The mayor says he wants to work cooperatively with the union. Some drivers worked as many as 80 hours a week and 11 of the top 30 drivers made $25,000 or more in overtime pay.
