Gun deer hunters net 11 percent fewer bucks in ‘09
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – State wildlife officials say gun deer
hunters harvested about 93,000 bucks last year. That’s an 11
percent decline from the previous year.
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources says the drop was
steeper for antlerless deer. The DNR says gun deer hunters
registered 147,000 last year, down 40 percent from 2008.
The DNR attributes the latter decrease to fewer antlerless-deer
tags available in the northern forest, and the suspension of
earn-a-buck hunting requirements in eastern Wisconsin.
Archers apparently had a better season. The DNR says the archery
buck harvest was up 19 percent to more than 41,000 deer.
The DNR says hunters registered a total of 134,000 bucks in
2009, down 3 percent from the previous year.
