Army sec recommends medal for Wis. soldier
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The secretary of the Army says a Wisconsin
Civil War hero deserves the Congressional Medal of Honor.
U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, a Wisconsin Democrat, has been lobbying
on behalf of a group of Wisconsin citizens pushing for Alonzo H.
Cushing to receive the award posthumously. Cushing, of Delafield,
fought in several battles, including Bull Run and Gettysburg, where
he was seriously wounded during Pickett’s Charge but stayed in the
fight until he was killed.
Secretary of the Army John McHugh has sent Feingold a letter
saying he will recommend Congress approve the award. McHugh says
Cushing clearly distinguished himself.
