PACKERS-COACHES
Packers release Sanders, 5 other coaches; more changes
could come
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) - There no doubt will be a new look to
the Green Bay Packers' defense next season.
Coach Mike McCarthy says the defensive scheme -- and all
the team's other schemes -- are being re-evaluated after the
Packers consistently failed to hold fourth-quarter leads on the
way to a 6-10 record.
Now McCarthy has released six assistants, including five on
defense, and had the special teams coach leave via retirement.
The only defensive coach retained is linebackers coach
Winston Moss, who could be in line to succeed Bob Sanders as
defensive coordinator but is also a candidate for the head
coaching job with the St. Louis Rams.
McCarthy's list of candidates to lead the defense could
include former San Francisco head coach Mike Nolan. He was
McCarthy's old boss with the 49ers.
RAPTORS-BUCKS
Redd, Villanueva lift Bucks over Raptors
MILWAUKEE (AP) - The Milwaukee Bucks avoided a late-game
collapse and instead beat the Toronto Raptors 107-97 at the
Bradley Center last night.
Michael Redd had a season-high 35 points and Charlie
Villanueva scored 13 of his 25 in the fourth quarter for the
Bucks, who won despite having center Andrew Bogut out of action
with back spasms.
It's the first time in 21 months that Milwaukee has won
without Bogut in the lineup. He's missed two games and could miss
another tomorrow night when Philadelphia plays in Milwaukee.
The Raptors kept the pressure on in last night's game and
led 95-91 after a long jumper by Will Solomon with just under
three minutes left.
But two 3-pointers from Luke Ridnour and another from
Charlie Bell helped the Bucks take control as time wound down.
VALPARAISO-UWM
Wisconsin-Milwaukee beats Valpariaso
MILWAUKEE (AP) - Avery Smith scored 22 points and
Wisconsin-Milwaukee survived a cold-shooting first half to beat
Valparaiso 61-47 in college basketball.
The Panthers (9-5, 5-0) won their fourth straight and
stayed undefeated in Horizon League play. The Crusaders (4-11,
1-3) lost for the 11th time in 13 games.
The Panthers trailed 23-18 at halftime but outscored the
Crusaders 11-2 to start the second period and take control.
UWGB-LOYOLA
Loyola of Chicago beats Wis.-Green Bay 62-60
CHICAGO (AP) - J.R. Blount hit two free throws with five
seconds left as Loyola of Chicago beat Wisconsin-Green Bay 62-60
in Horizon League men's basketball in Chicago last night.
The score was tied 11 times and the lead changed hands 13
times before the winning free throws for Loyola (9-6, 1-2).
Blount led the Ramblers with 17 points. Randy Berry had 16
points to lead the Phoenix (10-5, 3-1).
