In W.I.A.A. division five boys’ basketball sectional semifinal action from last night, the Cochrane-Fountain City Pirates defeated the Hillsboro Tigers in overtime, 57-56. Hillsboro trailed by as many as 14 points in the second half before coming all the way back to take the lead late in the fourth quarter. The Tigers led by two in the final minute of regulation, but CFC’s Brody Halverson hit a three-pointer with ten seconds left to take the lead by one. With less than a second to go, Matt Anderson was fouled and went to the line to shoot the double bonus. He was able to make one of the two shots to send the game into overtime. In a back-and-forth battle, Max Stockwell scored the first nine points for Hillsboro in OT, while Cale Lisowski scored ten of his team-high 15 points for CFC. Joey Helgerson gave the Tigers a one point lead in the final minute, but with two seconds left, Mason Baecker was able to get a shot to fall in the paint and give the Pirates a one point victory. Anderson had a game-high 18 points for Hillsboro, and also leading the way was Stockwell and Brandon Stanek who both finished with 15 points. The Tigers finish the season 21-5 overall, while the Pirates advance to take on Barneveld Saturday afternoon in the sectional final at La Crosse Logan High School.
