The Mauston Golden Eagles varsity football team wrapped up their 2011 season Friday night as they hosted the Nekoosa Papermakers in South Central Conference action. It was also senior and parent’s night at the Mauston High School as the seniors and their parents were recognized before the game. Nekoosa came into the game looking to remain undefeated in conference play to secure sole possession of their third consecutive conference title. The Papermakers proved to be too much for the Golden Eagles to handle, and Nekoosa went on to easily achieve their goal.

Nekoosa got out to a quick 27-0 lead after the first quarter as they scored on all four of their possessions. Nekoosa would take a 48-7 lead into halftime with Mauston’s only score in the first half coming on a 1-yard run by Cameron Dahlgren.

With the continuous clock in effect for most of the second half, both teams had limited possessions, but they each put two more touchdowns on the board. The Golden Eagles got an 87-yard touchdown run by JD Lierman, and a 35-yard TD run by Teague Fenwick. The Papermakers ended the night with nine touchdowns total as two of their star players, Austin KuKulka and Codey Ysquierdo, both went over the 1,000-yards rushing mark for the season. Kukulka achieved the feat with his first touchdown run of the night from 23-yards out, and Ysquierdo rushed for around 150-yards and a touchdown in the first half to reach the mark.

Mauston ends the season for the second year in a row with a 1-8 overall record, and a 1-4 conference record, with their only win coming against Adams-Friendship. Nekoosa ends the regular season with an 8-1 overall record, and a perfect 5-0 conference record, as they prepare themselves for the first round of the playoffs.
