Mauston boys streak continues with win over Westfield: 49-33
The Mauston Golden Eagles boys’ basketball team traveled to Westfield Friday night for South Central Conference play and stretched their winning streak to four games. Westfield gave Mauston all they could handle in the first half as the lead went back-and-forth. The Pioneers led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, but the Golden Eagles led 24-23 at halftime. Mauston was able to put the game away in the second half as they limited Westfield to just 3-points in the third quarter and outscored the Pioneers 25-10 in the second-half.
Westfield was led in scoring by senior Casey Knaup who finished with 12-points with 10 of the 12 coming in the first-half. Senior Derek Fenner added 8-points, freshman Greg Winkelman had 6-points off the bench, senior Cordell Maas contributed 3-points, and sophomores Alex Slowey and Tyler Janke added 2-points a piece. The Pioneers shot just 35% from the free-throw line making 6 of 17.
Mauston was again led by junior Joel Heesch who was held below his season average of 25.8 by finishing with 19-points. Senior Jack Orton helped out with another solid 10-points while senior Taylor Ingraham added 9-points. Senior Dale Osthoff contributed 5-points off the bench, junior Hunter Nelson had 4-points, and junior Ross Thompson added just 2-points. The Golden Eagles finished shooting 66% from the line making 8 of 12.
Mauston moves to 5-2 overall on the season and now 2-0 in the South Central Conference. The Golden Eagles are tied with the undefeated Wisconsin Dells Chiefs at the top of the conference. Westfield is still looking for their first win of the season as they fall to 0-7. Mauston will host the Richland Center Hornets in non-conference action Tuesday night before the Christmas break.
