Mauston boys’ soccer team beats Montello/Westfield in OT
Tuesday the Mauston High School boys’ soccer team hosted Montello/Westfield. A huge crowd was present, and it turned out to be quite a nail biter. The Mauston boys started the game very well, going behind after about 20 minutes with a great header from Montello. However, the second half was Mauston’s half. After conceding a penalty shot early in the first half, the Golden Eagles out shot Montello 3 to 1 to battle back from two goals down. Adam Ryan struck first for Mauston, with Captain Brandon Nielsen notching the assist. Garret Manthe struck next with Adam Ryan providing the assist, a beautiful 45 layback pass for Manthe to put it in the far corner to tie the match. Normal time ended, and the MHS boys took the field again, launching 12 shots on goal in the first ten minutes of the OT period. The Eagles finally put the game away in the second half of OT with a slow rolling ball scored by Adam Ryan, who was beautifully assisted by sophomore Tanner Hill to notch the Golden Eagles 6th win of the season. Coach Ryan Bjelland said, “The boys really showed their quality and character tonight. With this win, we have gotten the result in both games in which we have played extra time this season, and both of those games have been against regional teams we will have to face in the post season. We have won a lot of matches against regional teams, and this will be very important to getting us a great seed in the postseason so we can play home matches and go deep into the sectional. I’m so proud of the boys and their performance, but we have to take this momentum into our next match on Friday, and continue to improve everyday in training.” The Golden Eagles are next in action at their home pitch behind the Mauston High School on Friday at 4:30, facing Driftless United out of Viroqua for the second time this season, with the Eagles picking up a win 3-2 when they traveled there earlier in the season. They are also in action Saturday at 10 a.m. at Dodgeville Area High School.
