Mauston boys’ soccer picks up two more wins
The Mauston High School boys’ soccer team was back in action again this week, having great results with two more victories. Traveling to Wautoma to take on the hornets, the Eagles were coming off a duo of wins against Montello/Westfield and Driftless FC out of Viroqua, and built onto that winning streak Tuesday. Mauston looked threatening out of the gate, having about ten shots on goal before Josh McCaffrey sunk his first goal of the night with a beautiful display of skill putting it away in the top corner. Mauston dominated most of the match, outshooting Wautoma 4-1 overall. A scare for Mauston came late in the first half with Wautoma hitting both the crossbar and upright before rolling away from the goal and the line. In the second half, Mauston looked like the only team on the field. With 18 shots, most of them on target, Josh McCaffrey doubled his total for the night when Tanner Hill played a lovely thru ball to Josh for him to slot home. Thursday brought Prairie du Chien to Mauston High School, and despite the miserable weather, the MHS Eagles managed to pull off the win, coming from 1-nil down to win 2 to 1. P.D.C. opened the tally against the Eagles with a great strike to the upper corner after some careless Mauston play. However, the Eagles responded, with Adam Ryan slotting home into the lower right corner after moving the keeper the other way. Mauston began to take over the game at this point, controlling more than 3/4 the possession and outshooting P.D.C. 2-1. The Blackhawks gave up a penalty shot, but Josh McCaffrey’s attempt was well blocked by the keeper. The breakthrough finally came around the 60th minute, with Brandon Nielsen finding the net for the first time this season from long range. Because of the wind and weather, Brandon’s long ball took a funny hop and got past the keeper to roll in and give the Eagles their lead to end the match. Coach Ryan Bjelland said, “The fellas have had a great run of results, and they deserve it. They have been working hard in training, and are getting better every day. We have a little bet going that I’m going to wear a kilt if they get that 5th win in a row, so I’m hoping that I get to embarrass myself which means that the boys are playing well and getting the results they crave. We had a little difficulty finishing all our opportunities on goal during this week, but the boys responded well even though the goals weren’t coming. They battled through and took the match into their own hands and played their game. I’m proud of the boys and look forward to finishing up the regular season and getting a deep postseason run. We have the potential to surprise teams and get through the first few rounds and beyond, if things are working well. We have a few injury problems, but hopefully everyone will be back ready to rock and roll by the postseason.” The Eagles are in action three times next week, away at Adams-Friendship Tuesday at 5 p.m., home against West Salem in Mauston at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, and at the Lodi Quad in Lodi on Friday. This will wrap up the Eagles’ regular season, with the sectional tournament fast approaching. The seeding for the tournament should be finished this week, and the Eagles are hoping for a top-half seed and advancement into the later rounds of the sectional.
