The Golden Eagles were in action Thursday and started off their first day of school with a win in Viroqua against Driftless United FC. “The 100 degree heat on the pitch did not help matters, but the MHS boys played the best second half of soccer they have played this year to come from behind and win yet again, bringing their overall record to 4-2,” said Coach Bjelland. Adam Ryan struck first for the Golden Eagles, notching one in the 12th minute, getting the match off to a quick start. After two quick Driftless goals, the Golden Eagles battled back to give Jake Shaller a chance to equalize with about 6 minutes left in the half. Though the first half ended in a draw, the second half was anything but. The MHS boys controlled the ball so much that Driftless only managed one shot all half, and that was off target. When a handball was called in the Driftless box in the 56th minute, Captain Brandon Nielsen had a chance from the spot to put the Golden Eagles ahead. However, luck was not on his side as he made the keeper go the wrong way but then hit the upright, denying him his first goal of the season. The luck continued to fall that way, with the Golden Eagles hitting the bar 5 times in the second half alone. However, Josh McCaffery finally struck home to give the Eagles their much deserved victory. The Golden Eagles are in action again at Pacelli on Tuesday, September 6th at 7 p.m.
