Mauston boys open season with win over New Lisbon: 67-45
The Mauston Golden Eagles boys’ basketball team opened their season with a win Tuesday night as they hosted the New Lisbon Rockets in non-conference action. This is the fifth year in a row that the two teams have met in the season opener, and Mauston continued their dominance in the inner-county rivalry with a 22-point victory.
The Golden Eagles led by just 5-points at the end of the first quarter, but then senior Dale Osthoff came off the bench and lit it up in the second quarter along with junior starter Joel Heesch. Osthoff scored 11-points in the second quarter while Heesch contributed 9-points to give Mauston a 38-20 lead at halftime.
Thr Golden Eagles led by as many as 28 in the second half, and coasted to their first victory of the season.
The Rockets were led in scoring by junior Jack Ballering who finished with a team high 9-points, followed by sophomore Mike Myers off the bench with 8-points. Sophomore starter John Costello contributed 7-points for New Lisbon, while seniors Matt Spaniol and Nick Gollmar added 6-points a piece. Senior Ben Wyss added 5-points and sophomore Casey Brummond had 4-points off the bench.
The Golden Eagles were led by Heesch who had a game high 26-points for Mauston. Also scoring double digits for the Golden Eagles was Osthoff with all of his 11-points coming in the second quarter, and junior Hunter Nelson added 10-points. Seniors Taylor Ingraham and Andy Thrams both contributed 6-points a piece, while junior Ross Thompson had 5-points, junior Jacob Schaller added 2-points, and senior Jack Orton had just one free-throw on the night with limited playing time due to foul trouble.
The Golden Eagles are next in action Saturday night in Portage for more non-conference play.
