Mauston boys defeat West Salem: 67-51
The Mauston Golden Eagles boys basketball team tallied their third victory in a row after hosting the West Salem Panthers in non-conference action Monday night. After a lot of missed opportunities to pull away from the Panthers in the first quarter, West Salem kept it close and only trailed by two going into the second quarter. The Golden Eagles finally went on a run late in the first half to take a 29-16 lead at halftime. Mauston never trailed in the game and went on to win comfortably by 16-points.
The Panthers had four players reach double digit scoring with senior Tyler Kastenschmidt, junior Jacob Servais, and freshman Baily Williams scoring 13-points a piece, and senior Luke Schultz added 10-points off the bench. Senior Brandon Gaethke contributed 2-points to complete the scoring for West Salem. The Panthers were limited from the free-throw line shooting just 44% making 4 of 9.
The Golden Eagles were led in scoring again by junior Joel Heesch who finished with 26-points. Junior Hunter Nelson and senior Jack Orton also had solid performances with Nelson contributing 12-points and Orton added 10-points. It was a team effort as senior Taylor Ingraham finished with 7-points, senior Andy Thrams added 5-points off the bench, junior Ross Thompson had 4-points, junior Skylar Reicks finished with 2-points, and senior Dale Osthoff added one free-throw. Mauston shot 37 free-throws and finished the game shooting just 57% making 21 of them.
The Golden Eagles move to 4-2 on the season as West Salem falls to 2-2. Mauston will be on the road Friday night at Westfield for their second conference match-up of the season.
