Mauston Boys Advance to Regional Semi-Finals with Win Over Westfield: 49-36
The Mauston Golden Eagles boys basketball team hosted Pioneer Westfield Tuesday night in first round regional action. Mauston came out hot as they took a 19-7 lead after the first quarter. Senior Brady Nelson led the way with two 3-pointers, and 8 points total in the first quarter. The Golden Eagles went cold after that only scoring 7 points in the second quarter, but still led 26-17 at the half.
The Golden Eagles still struggled in the third quarter and again only scored 7 points. Westfield wasn’t able to take advantage of the opportunity as they only scored 6 points in the quarter, and Mauston took a 33-23 lead into the fourth quarter. The Golden Eagles maintained their lead throughout the fourth quarter, and finally sealed it away with a 13 point victory.
Westfield was led in scoring by their senior leader, Jake Semrow, who finished with 16 points. Also scoring for Pioneer Westfield was senior Ty McLaughlin with 7 points, junior Steven Rock finished with 6, junior Casey Knaup added one 3-pointer, and senior Dan Wohlfert and junior Justin Kruse both contributed 2 points. Westfield was 9 of 12 from the line, with three 3-pointers.
Mauston was again led by sophomore Joel Heesch who finished with 19 points on the night. Brady Nelson had 11 points in the first half, including three 3-pointers, and finished with 12 points total. Sophomore Hunter Nelson also had a solid night, as he scored 11 points. Senior David Linsmeyer added 6 points, and junior AJ Butts came off the bench in the final minute to make one free-throw. The Golden Eagles only made 12 of 21 from the free-throw line, but had five 3-pointers on the night.
Both coaches pulled their seniors in the final minute, as the Westfield seniors saw their high school careers come to an end. The two seniors for Mauston, Brady Nelson and David Linsmeyer, got a nice ovation from the crowd in their final home game of the season. Pioneer Westfield finishes with a 7-16 overall record, as Mauston improves to 16-7, and moves on to the regional semi-finals Friday night. The Golden Eagles will travel to Viroqua to take on the #2 seeded Blackhawks who beat Mauston last Thursday night 59-50.
