Familiar foes: Mount Union and Wis-Whitewater
SALEM, Va. (AP) – Mount Union and Wisconsin-Whitewater will play for the Divisional III national football championship – again. The teams have been the last two standing in eight of the past nine seasons and will square off in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl Friday night at Salem Stadium. Mount Union (14-0) got there this year with a new coach, 37-year-old Vince Kehres. He’s the son and former defensive coordinator for his father, Larry Kehres, who guided the Purple Raiders to 11 national championships in 27 years as coach. Mount Union will be appearing in the Stagg Bowl for the ninth consecutive season, while the Warhawks of Wisconsin-Whitewater (14-0) made it back after missing the playoffs entirely last season. The Warhawks had won three titles in a row before last season.
