The Golden Eagles’ boys’ tennis team had its best overall match of the season Friday when it lost 3-4 to Wisconsin Rapids Assumption.  Mauston got all 3 of its wins from its singles points; where at 1st Singles Tommy Napier defeated Silas Swank 6-0, 6-2, and at 2nd Singles Shawn Laursen won a 3-hour marathon match over Andrew Tiernan at 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 (7-1) in the deciding tiebreaker.  At 4th Singles freshman Joe Bauer prevailed 6-3, 6-1 over Assumption’s Clay Tubbs, meanwhile at 3rd Singles Chris Brunner fell 3-6, 1-6 to Elliot Bender.  At doubles the Golden Eagles were swept as 1st doubles of Josh Leach and Neil Staplin lost 1-6, 1-6 to Grant Sigler and Nathan Skifton; at 2nd Doubles Jarrett Schnaare and Matt Erickson lost 4-6, 3-6 to Kyle Roenius and Brian Davis, and at 3rd Doubles Mike Riedle and Lance Schroeder lost 2-6, 1-6 to Scott Rybycki and Brandon Smith.  In Junior Varsity action Nick Brunner lost 0-8 to Nathan Skifton, while Cody Smith and Alex Nelson won 8-7 (7-2) in a tiebreaker.  “We had our best match of the season thus far tonight, the kids were focused and we were competitive in all of our matches.  Lots of games going to deuce and I was really proud of the effort out there,” said Head Coach Derek Felska.  Assistant Coach Kyle Czys addded, “When the sun went away, it got a bit frosty out there but our kids played through it and I liked the improvement we saw from some of our younger players.  2nd doubles was very close to earning its first victory and earning wins from JV doubles and 4th singles by some of our new players are a sign of good things to come.”  The Golden Eagles next match is against Portage (in Mauston) on Monday.
