Tobacco store owner charged
MADISON, Wis. (AP) – The state Department of Justice has charged a southeastern Wisconsin tobacco store owner with evading state taxes and operating without the proper permits. According to criminal complaints filed last week, 40-year-old Mohammad Abdul Qadeer Siddiqui of West Allis owns tobacco stores in Sheboygan and Milwaukee County. State tax agents wrote in the complaints Siddiqui didn’t pay nearly $270,000 in excise tax on his products in 2010 and 2012 or obtain a distributor’s permit. They also alleged he didn’t keep proper records of purchases from his suppliers. Online court records did not indicate whether Siddiqui has an attorney. Reached by cellphone on Monday, Siddiqui told a reporter to call him back. Siddiqui himself then returned the call the said he had no comment.
