OSHA Fine-Concrete Mixer Accident
MILWAUKEE (AP) – A U.S. workplace safety agency has fined a Milwaukee plant $4,900 after a worker was trapped in a cement mixing machine. According to Occupational Safety and Health Administration records, SIC Lazaro received a serious violation citation. That’s because the worker was exposed to the accidental restart of the machine. The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports the 43-year-old worker was injured while cleaning the mixer in May. Authorities describe the cement mixer as a portable machine with an elevated platform, about as high as the second floor of a building, and a 5-foot-deep mixing box. The Spanish manufacturer purchased the plant for $1.7 million in 2012. SIC Lazaro manufactures counterweights for cranes, elevators and other industrial uses. A telephone message left after-hours for a company executive was not immediately returned Thursday.
