Manitowoc landmark coming down
MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) – Demolition work has started to remove a mammoth landmark that has stood in downtown Manitowoc for more than a century. Many residents are happy to see the abandoned Mirro manufacturing plant come down because it was a reminder of jobs lost overseas. The 900,000-thousand-square-foot former cookware plant once provided employment for thousands before Newell-Rubbermaid moved production to Mexico. Businessman Eric Spirtas bought the plant for $200 nearly eight years ago. He says the recession and other factors made reusing the building impossible. Instead, he’s focusing on salvaging what he can from the plant, including northern hemlock and maple floorboards. HTR Media (http://htrne.ws/1mVm8JH ) says Spirtas hopes demolition can be completed within a year.
