WAUSAU, Wis. (AP) – A woman is accused of stealing nearly $500,000 from her employer in Marathon County.   A criminal complaint says 40-year-old Michelle Walters, of Athens, embezzled the money from Northwestern Wisconsin Associates over a 20-year period.        The owner of the Wausau retirement plan company, Matthew Stifler, says the money was taken from the business account and no clients have been affected. Authorities say Walters wrote dozens of unauthorized checks and entered a bogus payee in the company’s ledger. Officials say many checks were written to credit card companies, utilities, travel agents, and other businesses for Walters’ personal gain.   WSAW-TV (http://bit.ly/13RD5Y0 ) reports Walters is free on a $100,000 signature bond. She’ll return to court July 1. If convicted on all counts, she faces a maximum sentence of 70 years in prison.
