Two local seniors are part of 32 students named finalists for the 2014 WIAA Scholar Athlete Award. According to the WIAA, 16 senior boys and girls from both private and public schools were honored for their efforts in both the classroom and their sports performances throughout their high school career. Cullen Pedersen is a senior at New Lisbon High School and Andrea Thomas is a senior at Mauston High School. Cullen Pedersen played football, wrestling, and baseball. This year, he was a part of the Conference Champion football team and wrestling team. Individually, Pedersen was Division 3 wrestling state champion. Pedersen plans to study environmental engineering, but is undecided on where he plans to go to college. Andrea Thomas was involved in cross country, basketball, and track and field. Thomas has received all-conference first team honors four times in basketball and was part of the cross country conference champion team all four years. Thomas will be heading to St. Cloud State in Minnesota to pursue a degree in accounting and also plans to play basketball there. Both students say they are honored and thrilled to represent their school in this way. The 2014 WIAA Scholar Athlete Finalists, as well as their families and school representatives, will be recognized at an awards ceremony Sunday, May 4 at the Jefferson Street Inn in Wausau. Each one will receive a medallion and certificate, and will take with them a special plaque for display in their school’s trophy case. A webcast of the awards ceremony will be available at www.wiaawi.org during and after the ceremony beginning at 1 p.m. on Sunday, May 4. All 825 students nominated for the award by their high school athletic directors will be presented with a medal at their school in a manner to be determined by the school administration recognizing them as their school’s top male or female scholar athlete.
