Every year, the Department of Natural Resources awards cities or villages a Recycling Excellence Award based on their recycling programs. This year, the City of Mauston received the 2012 Enforcement Leadership Award. This award was based on data from the city’s 2012 recycling annual reports. In a letter to the city, the DNR said that the city of Mauston “has shown exceptional diligence to pursue and track enforcement actions taken in the West Central Region.” Only the top ten percent of responsible units in the program receive an award. The Recycling Excellence Award is a pilot program is designed to create interest in recycling and offer a positive experience for local governments in the state’s program. The DNR is hoping to implement the program throughout the entire state in 2014.  For more information on the program, visit dnr.wi.org and search “Recycling Excellence Awards.”
