The Sparta City Fire Department responded to a structure fire Saturday morning. Assistant Fire Chief Scott Perkins said, “at 7:23am the Monroe County 9-1-1 Communication Center received a call of a house fire at 806 Central Avenue. Upon arrival, fire was coming from both the front and rear windows. Three adults and four children were able to escape. Still inside were two dogs and several cats. All the cats were rescued by fire fighters. One dog had escaped out the back of the house. The other dog is believed to have escaped as well, but was unable to be located at the time of the fire. 28-year old Shawnyeaha Martensen and 49-year old Dennis Nadherny were sleeping in the living/room area when they were awakened by the smell of smoke. Martensen’s four children, ranging in age from 6 and down, were standing by the front door. Another male occupant, 22-year old Kyle Harmon, was asleep in the downstairs bedroom. Red Cross was contacted to assist the family. The structure is a total loss. 21-fire fighters fought the blaze for 3 1/2 hours.”
