Portage man arrested in death of Mauston woman
“23-year old Andrew Hayes was taken into custody Tuesday evening in the Portage area and is currently being detained in the Columbia County Jail,” said Mauston Police Chief Mark Messer Wednesday morning. Hayes is being charged with 1st Degree Reckless Homicide in the death of 24-year old Samantha Funk. According to the criminal complaint, on April 12th, 2012 Officer Lueneburg was dispatched to a residence in the City of Mauston for an unresponsive female, later identified as Samantha Funk. Funk was lying on her back on the floor of the apartment. The Officer could feel no pulse and her skin was cold to the touch. The Officer observed in plain view numerous drugs and drug paraphernalia. Juneau County Coroner Kathy Kohutko pronounced Funk dead at 4:40am Thursday morning, April 12th. An autopsy revealed high levels of heroin. Investigation revealed Funk’s boyfriend, Hayes, had allegedly traveled to Madison the day before to purchase and use heroin. According to the complaint, Funk was afraid of needles and never injected herself.
