Authorities are warning area residents of a phone scam that has been reported by numerous Vernon County people. Sheriff John Spears says, “A person calls and tells the person that he has won either a contest, sweepstakes, Mega Millions, or a car. The person is then asked to send a green dot card and money order or check in the amount of $5000 to pay for the insurance on the winnings to addresses in Miami, Las Vegas, New York, and New Jersey. Elderly citizens appear to be targeted, but anyone could receive such a phone call.” Sheriff Spears advises residents not to send any money or information and report this scam to your local law enforcement agency.
