Icy conditions cause crashes
Icy conditions resulted in two motor vehicle accidents Christmas Eve in Vernon County minutes apart. Sheriff John Spears said, “about 11:35am Monday morning a Viola woman, 23-year old Holly Gander was traveling west on Highway 56 near Cook Hill Road just east of the City of Viroqua. Gander lost control because of the freezing drizzle and her black Ford Explorer went down an embankment coming to rest on a concrete box culvert. A passenger, 22-year old old Taylor Visgar of Viola, was transported by ambulance to Vernon Memorial Healthcare in Viroqua with a head injury. He was treated and released. Gander initially refused treatment, but later reported a possible head injury. A few minutes later, a Viroqua woman, 19-year old Sharilyn Nelson, lost control of her Pontiac Sunfire while approaching the accident scene. The car spun around and collided with a sheriff’s patrol car parked along the side of the road. There was minor damage to both vehicles. Nelson was uninjured.”
