A former New Lisbon woman, who now has a South Dakota address, was transported from the Juneau County Jail Friday morning to the Taycheeda Women’s Prison near Fond du Lac to begin her 3-year prison sentence.  45-year old Lisa Sharp was convicted earlier this month of homicide by negligent operation of motor vehicle.  In a plea deal with prosecutors, a second count of injury by intoxicated use of a motor vehicle was dismissed but read into the record.  According to the criminal complaint, on Friday morning, May 21st, 2010, Sharp was traveling home north of Mauston on Highway 58 towards Woodland Hills after dropping her children at school in Mauston when the SUV she was driving crossed the center line and struck a south bound SUV being operated by then 38-year old  Christine Leopold, also of New Lisbon.  Leopold was 9-months pregnant and was scheduled to have a ceasarean section on June 1st, 2010.  Leopold was taken immediately into the operating room at Mile Bluff Medical Center in Mauston where her child, Owen Smith, was delivered.  Because of a ruptured uterus, Owen was outside the uterus at the time of surgery.  The medical report stated, in spite of the fact that he was 37-plus weeks gestational age, resuscitation attempts were unsuccessful and the infant most like died from acute blood loss. The mother also suffered from significant post operative anemia and fractures to her foot.  Toxicology results of Sharp’s blood samples revealed high levels of Ambien and Benadryl above the therapeutic range and evidence of oxycodone within the therapeutic range.  In addition to three years in prison plus 5-years of extended supervision, the court also ordered Sharp to pay over $31,000 in restitution to the Leopolds for loss wages and a hospital bill.
