Elderly Genoa woman dies in house fire
An elderly Town of Genoa woman died Friday night as a result of a house fire. Vernon County Sheriff John Spears said, “50-year old Steve Boardman came home to his residence on Highway 35 in the Town of Genoa shortly after 11:30pm and found his house fully engulfed in flames. The Vernon County Sheriff’s Office and Genoa-Harmony Fire Department were there within minutes but the house burned quickly. Steve Boardman’s mother, 78-year old Helen Boardman, was in her bedroom when the house began to burn and was unable to get out. She was later pronounced dead at the scene by the Vernon County Coroner’s Office. Two dogs in the house were also unable to get out and died inside as a result of the fire.” The fire remains under investigation.
