Razing of a downtown Mauston building caused a natural gas line break Thursday morning.

The Juneau County Courthouse in downtown Mauston was evacuated Thursday morning as a result of a gas leak.  Undersheriff Craig Stuchlik said, “I ordered the evacuation as a precaution.”  Mauston Police Chief Mark Messer said, “during the razing of the former Radio Shack building next to the newspaper office, a natural gas line broke in the rear of the property, causing northwest winds to carry the fumes out over Riverside Park and the Lemonweir River.  According to the Mauston Fire Department, there was no need to evacuate downtown businesses.  Traffic was rerouted for approximately an hour.  Allliant Energy and the Mauston Public Works Department secured the leak.”
