The nine-day gun deer season begins Saturday and as people rush to the woods, the Department of Natural Resources has several tips on how to be safe while enjoying the season. The first tip is to dress warmly. The forecast for the deer season is projecting low temperatures and high winds. In addition, the DNR says the most important tip is to protect yourself and others. It says that hunters should practice the four rules of firearm safety: Treat every firearm as if it is loaded, always point the muzzle in a safe direction, be certain of your target and beyond, and keep your finger off the trigger guard until you are ready to shoot.
