With the coming of colder weather, area lakes and ponds have started to freeze over. However, it might not be as thick as it looks. In a news release, Recreation Safety Chief Todd Schaller reminds outdoor enthusiasts that ice is never predictable. “Because of its unstable condition and unpredictability, anyone who travels on frozen lakes and rivers is taking a risk, and should use caution,” Schaller said. The Department of Natural Resources has several safety tips for anyone who is looking to head outside on Wisconsin lakes and rivers.
