Some law enforcement agencies have seen an increase in the “Grandparent” fraud cases in the past few weeks. This is the scam where a suspect calls a Grandparent posing as a grandchild or relative and tearfully explaining that they have been arrested for some violation of the law and need cash for bail immediately. The details may vary from case to case but the scam is always similar in nature. A legitimate Law Enforcement agency would not ask someone to send large amounts of cash through the mail. If you or someone you know is approached in this way, contact your local Police or Sheriff’s Department before sending any cash, I-tunes cards, etc. via mail or wire.
