A Mauston man was taken into custody early Wednesday morning.  Police said about 1 a.m., someone entered an apartment in the 300-block of West State Street in the City of Mauston.  The tenant was awaken by a flashlight and initially thought his wife had returned home from work, so he called out her name.  When the individual shining the light did not respond, he called his wife’s name again and the individual took off running.  The victim looked around his apartment and noticed several food items missing from the freezer.
About a half-hour later, about 1:30 a.m., a young man was holding a flashlight and a tool trying to open the basement door of a residence in the same block.  The homeowner, who had been waken by the thunderstorm, watched the man for a while, then opened the door and asked him what he was doing?  The man ran-off.  The homeowner was able to give police a description of the suspect.  Officer Chad Bailey  was able to locate the man walking down a driveway in the 300-block of Maine Street in the City of Mauston.  He was carrying a plastic bag with frozen food inside.  The officer took the food items to the tenant in the apartment.  He identified the items as food from his freezer.
28-year old Matthew Sweatt was then arrested, transported to the Juneau County Jail, and tentatively charged with burglary and attempted burglary.  At the jail, Sweatt asked the deputy for a sack lunch because he had not eaten in two-days.
