Marcum, Brewers settle at $7,725,000

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – Pitcher Shaun Marcum and the Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to a one-year contract worth $7,725,000, just ahead of the scheduled start of their salary arbitration hearing.

Friday’s deal was at the midpoint between the $8.7 million and $6.75 million figures filed by the sides when they exchanged proposed arbitration salaries last month.

Marcum made $4.05 million last year, when he went 13-7 with a 3.54 ERA. He is eligible for free agency after this season.

Reliever Jose Veras is the last Milwaukee player in arbitration.

Packers name Clements new offensive coordinator

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) – The Green Bay Packers have hired Tom
Clements as their new offensive coordinator.
     Clements has been the Packers’ quarterbacks coach since 2006. He
replaces Joe Philbin, who left Green Bay to become the Miami
Dolphins’ head coach.
     Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers credits Clements for helping
his development.
     Coach Mike McCarthy called Clements’ promotion an “obvious
decision.” The offensive-minded McCarthy calls his own plays, but
relies on his offensive coordinator to plan during the week and
help make adjustments during games.
     Clements was a three-year starter at quarterback for Notre Dame,
guiding the Irish to a national championship in 1973. He played 12
seasons in the Canadian Football League.

Bielema unveils 12-player Wis. recruiting class

MADISON, Wis. (AP) – Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema kept his
recruiting class small and easier to manage this season in light of
six assistant coaches leaving for other jobs. But Bielema said he’s
still happy with the haul.
     Bielema introduced a 12-player recruiting class Wednesday.
     The Badgers saw six assistants leave after appearing in their
second straight Rose Bowl last month.
     Bielema says it was “a blessing in disguise” that it was a
small 2012 class. Otherwise, with that high a turnover among
coaches, some recruits may have chosen other programs.
     One of the class’s touted players is Bart Houston, a 6-foot-4,
215-pound quarterback out of De La Salle High School in Concord,
Calif. Houston, a four-star recruit in some publications, led his
team to a 39-1 record over three seasons as a starter.

Bucks win 105-97, beat Heat again

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Brandon Jennings scored 31 points, including
three 3-pointers in a critical stretch of the fourth quarter, and
Milwaukee beat Miami 105-97 on Wednesday night for the Bucks’
second win over the Heat this season.
     Jennings also had eight assists while Drew Gooden added 17
points and nine rebounds for the Bucks, who have won three
straight.
     LeBron James scored a season-high 40 points, including a
highlight-reel windmill dunk at the end of his huge first quarter.
James had 24 points in the first quarter, the most points any
player has scored in a quarter this season, according to STATS LLC.
     Dwyane Wade added 23 points for the Heat, but it wasn’t enough
to beat a Bucks team that also recently knocked off the Los Angeles
Lakers.

Heesch breaks 1,000 in win over Westfield: 71-49

Tuesday night, the Mauston Golden Eagles boys basketball team hosted Pioneer Westfield for their second match-up of the season in South Central Conference action. Mauston was looking to sweep Westfield for the eighth season in a row, and stay just one game back of Wisconsin Dells in the conference standings.

In their first meeting earlier this season at Westfield, the Pioneers made a game out of it in the first-half as they led 11-9 at the end of the first quarter, and only trailed by one-point at halftime before the Golden Eagles put the game away with ease in the second-half. Their second meeting was a lopsided affair as Mauston got out to a 19-5 lead after the first quarter, and led 39-22 at the half. The Golden Eagles extended their lead to 60-31 at the end of three quarters, and finished with a 71-49 victory.

Westfield was led by senior Casey Knaup who made three 3-pointers in a row in the fourth quarter, and finished with 18-points. Sophomore Tyler Janke contributed 12-points, while senior Cordell Maas added 7-points, and freshman Greg Winkelman made two 3-pointers off the bench for his 6-points. Sophomore Alex Slowey finished with 3-points, senior Derek Fenner had 2-points, and senior Steven Rock added one free-throw. Westfield shot 64% from the line making 9 of 14.

Mauston was once again led by junior Joel Heesch who finished with 27-points to put him at 428-points on the season, and with his performance he went over the 1,000 point mark for his career in just over two and a half seasons with the Golden Eagles. Athletic Director Randy Fabian presented Heesch with the game ball after the game in recognition of his accomplishment. Heesch is currently ranked second in the state of Wisconsin this season with his point total and 26.75 points-per-game average.

The Golden Eagles were also led by senior Taylor Ingraham who had 12-points, and senior Jack Orton and junior Ross Thompson added 11-points apiece. Thompson had his best game from 3-point range as he made three shots from beyond the arc. Junior Hunter Nelson and senior Brock Huebner finished with 4-points apiece, with Huebner picking up his first points of the season. Junior Skylar Reicks also added 2-points off the bench. Mauston started out well from the free-throw line, but then finished shooting just 50% making 8 of 16.

The Golden Eagles will wrap-up their 3-game homestand Friday night as they host the Poynette Pumas in non-conference play. With the win Tuesday night, the Golden Eagles improve to 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the South Central Conference to stay a game back of Wisconsin Dells who remains perfect in conference play. Westfield falls to 3-13 overall and just 1-6 in conference play.

Marquette rallies to beat Seton Hall

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Jae Crowder had 20 points and 12 rebounds,
helping No. 15 Marquette rally from a sluggish first half to beat
Seton Hall 66-59 on Tuesday night.
     Vander Blue scored 16 points and Darius Johnson-Odom added 14
for the Golden Eagles (19-4, 8-2 Big East), who extended their
winning streak to seven games.
     Trailing at halftime, Marquette turned to Blue and Johnson-Odom
in a 16-2 run to take the lead midway through the second half.
     Herb Pope scored 16 points for the Pirates (15-7, 4-6), who have
lost five straight.
     Former Marquette standout Dwyane Wade attended the game, along
with Miami Heat teammate LeBron James. Miami is in town to play the
Milwaukee Bucks on Wednesday.

No. 19 Wisconsin beats Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) – Jordan Taylor scored 18 points,
including a key 3-pointer from the top of key with 1:44 left, to
help No. 19 Wisconsin hold off Penn State 52-46 on Tuesday night
for its sixth straight victory.
     Taylor made six free throws over the final minute, helping the
Badgers (18-5, 7-3 Big Ten) overcome an early nine-point deficit.
     Trailing 40-38, Penn State (10-13, 2-8) missed on three tries to
tie or take the lead. Jon Graham missed two foul shots before
Jermaine Marshall misfired on a 3 and missed a layup after grabbing
his own rebound.
     Taylor took over from there with his clutch 3. He scored 13 of
Wisconsin’s last 17 points.
     Tim Frazier led Penn State with 21 points.
     Penn State coach Patrick Chambers wore jet-black Nike sneakers
on the sideline, sporting a look like late Hall of Fame football
coach Joe Paterno.

Bucks 103-82 win over Pistons

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Brandon Jennings had 21 points, reserve Mike
Dunleavy added a season-high 20 on 8-of-10 shooting and the
Milwaukee Bucks rolled to a 103-82 victory over the skidding
Detroit Pistons on Monday night.
     Drew Gooden shot 7 of 9 and scored 16 points for Milwaukee,
including seven straight early in the third quarter during a
decisive 12-2 run to open the second half. Detroit, which has lost
five straight and nine of 10, never led in falling to 4-18.
     Rodney Stuckey led the Pistons with 19 points, and Greg Monroe
added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
     Milwaukee has won four of six after losing three straight.
     Jennings scored nine points in the first 7 1/2 minutes, helping the
Bucks to a 30-16 lead after the first quarter. He added 12 in the
third period.

Brewers’ formula may change without Fielder

MILWAUKEE (AP) – Prince Fielder is gone for good. Ryan Braun
wasn’t there, either.
     The two names most frequently mentioned during the Milwaukee
Brewers’ offseason weren’t a part of the team’s fan festival on
Sunday. And if that’s the way things still look at the beginning of
the season, the Brewers insist they’ll be just fine.
     The Brewers still plan on contending this season, even if their
formula for winning may change after Fielder signed with Detroit.
Braun still faces a potential 50-game suspension under baseball’s
drug policy.
     Manager Ron Roenicke says the team will try to be more
“creative” on offense and play a different type of game. Instead
of waiting for home runs, they’ll try to manufacture runs.
     Roenicke says the team will do “whatever it takes to get to the
playoffs.”
