(AP) – The Green Bay Packers have signed cornerback Charles Woodson to a contract extension through the 2014 season.
     Financial terms were not immediately available Thursday. The 33-year-old Woodson says he intends to retire as a Packer.
     Woodson, the 2009 AP Defensive Player of the year, had three seasons left on his existing deal. But his standout play, combined with a recent new deal for New York Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis, likely compelled the Packers to act.
     Woodson had a career-high nine interceptions last season.

(AP) – The Green Bay Packers’ offensive line got off to such a bad start last year that it’s even serving as a punchline for the satirical newspaper The Onion.
     In its tongue-in-cheek NFL preview this week, the paper’s website wrote, “After giving up 50 sacks in 2009, Green Bay’s offensive line appears to have forgiven Aaron Rodgers for whatever he did.”
     The Packers can’t hide from the pass protection failings that nearly derailed their season last year – they actually gave up a league-worst 51 sacks, as backup Matt Flynn wasn’t completely spared from the carnage – but they’re using their failures as a rallying point going into Sunday’s regular season opener at
Philadelphia.

     He’ll have to decide where to hang the painting commissioned in honor of his 600th career save, where to put the ball from his achievement that he got on Tuesday night and when to respond to the hundreds of calls and texts he received.
     Hoffman says he talked to commissioner Bud Selig on Wednesday morning and also spoke with Hall of Famer Robin Yount.

(AP) – During training camp, Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers noted that the team has a different kind of swagger this year. He calls it “real confidence.”
     Now that Rodgers enters Sunday’s season opener in Philadelphia as a fashionable pick to become the league’s MVP this year, Rodgers said his own approach hasn’t changed. He says his confidence always has been real.
     In his first two seasons as a starter, Rodgers has shown he can replace an icon, play hurt and take hits without losing his composure. So wide receiver Greg Jennings says there’s no reason to think Rodgers won’t be able to handle high expectations.

     Davidson said he decided to throw out 44-year-old Sean A. Ottow of Waukesha, Wis., in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday night because he wanted to make sure Molina wouldn’t do something to escalate the situation. Davidson spoke Wednesday before the series finale.
     Ottow told The Associated Press while handcuffed to a bench on Miller Park’s service level that he never swore at Molina. Davidson said Ottow was intoxicated and that Molina never requested the fan be removed.
     The Brewers’ 4-2 win over the Cardinals featured four ejections before Trevor Hoffman earned his 600th career save.

(AP) – John Clay says he has no shortage of motivation, and his first appearance this season looked a whole lot like last year’s dominating stretch.
     The Wisconsin running back and reigning Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year ran for 123 yards and two touchdowns in a 41-21 victory over UNLV.
     It was his seventh straight 100-yard game dating back to last season. Still, Ohio State’s Terrelle Pryor was the preseason pick as the conference’s biggest offensive star.
     Clay says he’s got plenty of doubters because of his ever-changing weight, injury concerns and the criticism he took for his demeanor after poor performances last season.
     The 11th-ranked Badgers host San Jose State this Saturday.
