Several months ago Woodside Ranch owner Damon Zumwalt approached the Juneau County Board requesting the County guarantee a $7-million loan towards a youth sports complex in the Town of Lemonweir. The County had done due diligence in determining the financial stability of Zumwalt, his businesses, and his ability to repay the loan. Aaron Gadouas of Stern Brothers had done a financial study last fall, now CSL Conventions, Sports, and Leisure International of Minneapolis has continued the due diligence process and completed a feasibility study. Thursday morning CSL Project Manager, Wes Johnson, Aaron Gadouas, and Woodside Ranch representative Dave Wabick held an in-depth meeting at the Woodside Rance east of Mauston before several Juneau County Supervisors and members of the community. Wes Johnson said, “the CSL study estimates the sports complex could attract almost 374,000 visitors annually resulting in a net operating income of $1.9-million.” The Juneau County Board is anticipated to vote on the approximately $8-million proposal at its February meeting.

Michael Foods, of Minnetonka, is recalling eggs in brine sold in
10- and 25-pound pails for institutional use in 34 states. The eggs
carry six brand names: Columbia Valley Farms, GFS, Glenview Farms,
Papetti’s, Silverbrook and Wholesome Farms.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration says the eggs were
produced at Michael Foods’ plant in Wakefield, Neb., and were
bought by food distributors and manufacturers. There have been no
reports of illness connected to the eggs. But, the company says the
eggs have the potential to be contaminated with a strain of
listeria that can cause serious infections in those with weaker
immune systems.

SCOTTSBORO, Ala. (AP) – School board members in Jackson County
have decided not to ban a man known as the “Bible Man” from
holding monthly meetings with elementary school children.
The board took up the matter this week in response to complaints
that religious assemblies were being held during the school day.
The Wisconsin-based Freedom from Religion Foundation objected to
the voluntary school meetings on behalf of some parents.
The Huntsville Times reports (http://bit.ly/z7PqOc) the board
deliberated for an hour, as a standing-room-only crowd of more than
100 people prayed, sang and shared stories of the “Bible Man,” as
Horace Turner Jr. is called.
Superintendent Kenneth Harding says Turner leads assemblies with
elementary children to tell stories from the Bible.
Freedom from Religion co-president Annie Laurie Gaylor said the
board’s decision “is totally unacceptable.”

whether Wisconsin violated treaty rights by not consulting with
tribal governments that might be affected by a state mining bill.
The Bureau of Indian Affairs says it’s conducting an inquiry
after at least one tribal government asked it to get involved.
The contentious mining bill would streamline the state’s complex
mine-permitting process. Republicans hope the bill will kick-start
plans for an iron mine just south of Lake Superior.
A Wisconsin Public Radio report (http://bit.ly/AsuQNj ) says
officials from the Lac du Flambeau, Red Cliff, Bad River and
Menominee tribes claim the lawmaking process ignored treaty rights.
Bureau spokeswoman Nedra Darling says the agency is acting on a
2009 executive order that federal officials consult with tribal
governments on matters that involve the tribes.
Northern States Power Company-Wisconsin, Dairyland Power
Commission to approve the 345-kilovolt line.
The utilities say they need the line to serve rising demand in
Commission’s environmental impact study, however, found it’s
unclear whether the area’s population will grow enough to justify
the utilities’ projections.
The Wisconsin Public Service Commission has scheduled public
hearings for March 13 in Alma and for March 14 in Centerville.

plane leading endangered whooping cranes South for the winter has
been forced to stop short of its Florida destination.
Officials decided Thursday to stay in Alabama.
The nine young cranes and the crew involved in Operation
Migration have been in northern Alabama since before Christmas.
The flock started from a Wisconsin wildlife area in October.
Their destination was the Florida wetlands.
The crew had tried several times to get the birds to follow the
aircraft since mid-December, but the birds have not been
cooperative.
Operation Migration spokeswoman Liz Condie said biologists and
other experts decided Thursday that the birds will be put in crates
and transported by road to Alabama’s Wheeler National Wildlife
Refuge for the rest of the winter.
